글자, 그림이 되다 Writing Becomes Painting

 

‘글자, 그림이 되다’는 동양 정신철학과 조형예술의 근간인 서예를 통해 동양의 본래 정신을 되새겨 보고, 추상미술의 흐름을 살펴볼 수 있도록 기획된 전시이다. 20세기 추상미술을 관통하고 있는 동양의 서예정신을 조선시대 문인 묵객의 서예부터 국내외 추상미술까지 50여 점의 작품 속에서 더욱 구체적으로 이해할 기회를 제공한다.

전시는 일필휘지 에너지, 즉 순간적인 붓 놀림으로 단숨에 완성되는 ‘시간성’에 주목하고 있다. 현대미술가들은 동북아의 정신사상인 유불선에 대한 깊은 관심을 토대로 서예의 서법과 회화 원칙을 더욱 깊이 이해하고 이를 자신의 작업에 적극적으로 수용하였고 그로 인해 ‘서체추상’이 등장하게 된다. 서체추상은 양차 세계대전 후 기존의 체제와 미학적 현상에 대한 반작용으로 나타난 경향도 있지만, 서구작가들이 매료되었던 것은 초서적인 빠른 형세의 붓 놀림으로 단숨에 완성되는 시간성과 자율적이고 주체적인 선과 획에 대한 관심이다. 이번 전시는 서예가 지닌 추상성과 정신성을 자신의 작업에 응용했던 현대 작가들의 작품 속에서 동양 서예정신의 가치와 의미를 새롭게 살펴보는 자리가 될 것이다.

It would be quite meaningful to ruminate on Asian thought through calligraphy that formed a foundation for Asian philosophy and visual art, which may offer a clue to understanding the hard-to-understand abstract art. For this purpose, POSCO Art Museum presents ‘Writing Becomes Painting’ which features calligraphic works by men of letters and experts in calligraphy in the Chosun dynasty of Korea, as well as calligraphic abstract paintings by Korean and Western artists. This will provide an opportunity for the viewers to develop a concrete understanding of the spirit of Asian calligraphy that run through the abstract art of the 20th century.

This exhibition is paying attention to the unique ‘temporality’ and the energy of ‘dashing off with one stroke of a brush’, what fascinated Western artists most in Asian calligraphy and painting. A group of contemporary artists began to study not only calligraphic techniques and the principles of Chinese painting, but also Chinese philosophical traditions. They actively introduced all of them in their art, developing ‘calligraphic abstraction’. The exhibition offers a chance to cast a new attention on the signification of Asian calligraphy in the works of contemporary artists which apply abstractness and spirituality of calligraphy.
