표현주의 미술의 선구자이자 노르웨이를 대표하는 화가 에드바르드 뭉크(Edvard Munch, 1863-1944)의 주요 작품이 국내 최초로 소개된다.

 

국내에서 그동안 쉽게 접할 수 없었던 뭉크의 예술을 알리기 위한 취지에서 기획된 이번 전시에서는 뭉크가 전 생애에 걸쳐 남긴 유화, 드로잉, 판화, 사진 등 99점의 작품을 선보인다. 이번 전시는 뭉크의 삶을 들여다보고, 동시에 인간의 내면을 솔직하게 표현하여 작품으로 승화시킨 그의 예술을 향한 열정을 살펴볼 특별한 기회다. 전시를 통해 일상에 지친 현대인의 감성을 어루만지고, 뭉크가 모던 사회에 끼친 영향력을 탐구해 볼 수 있는 장을 마련하고자 한다. 

The exhibition ‘Edvard Munch and the Modern Soul’ is held from July 3 to October 12, at Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center. The main purpose of ‘Edvard Munch and Modern Soul’ is to introduce major works of Norway’s most well-known artist Edvard Munch, who created one of the most iconic image 'The Scream', for the first time in Korea.

This exhibition is achieved in cooperation with Munch Museet in Olso.  The exhibition is consisting of 99 works by Munch (half of them paintings). It is organized with 5 sections, Munch Himself, Modern Breakthrough, Existence, Vitality and Night, and it is mainly deal with the Frieze of Life- motif which occupied him through more or less his whole career both in his paintings and prints - on the themes of love, jealousy, anxiety and death.  It also includes other motifs such as self- portraits, landscapes, portraits, and nudes.  All in all it will give a representative picture of Munch's art, with works spanning most of his career.
