권순철 KWUN, Sun-cheol

  대구미술관은 2016년 첫 기획전으로 ‘권순철 : 시선’전을 선보인다. 권순철은 1944년 창원에서 태어나 대구·경북지역에서 성장하였다. 그는 어린 시절 6·25전쟁에서 아버지와 삼촌을 여의고 그러한 슬픔을 통해 형성된 트라우마로부터 한국 근현대사의 이면에 집중하였으며, 그중에서도 다중적 의미가 있는 민중을 소재로 독자적인 작품세계를 구축하였다.

 이번 대구미술관 전시는 작가의 60여 년 작품세계를 한눈에 관람할 수 있도록 1954년의 초기 습작부터 최신작까지 폭넓게 구성하였다. 또한, 작가의 주 장르인 회화는 물론 테라코타와 설치까지 확장된 매체의 영역을 포함하였으며, 특히 개인의 아픔을 초월하여 민족의 애환을 대변하는 의미를 내포한 <얼굴>, <넋>, <신체> 등 160점의 대표 연작들로 작가가 시대를 바라보는 시선을 조명한다.

  The Daegu Art Museum presents KWUN Sun-cheol : The Gaze, an exhibition featuring local artist KWUN Sun-cheol as the first exhibition of 2016. KWUN was born in Changwon in 1944 and grew up in the Daegu Gyeongbuk region. His works highlight the hidden side of modern and contemporary Korean history through the trauma of losing his father and uncle during the Korean War as a child. He has established his own distinctive artistic idioms while addressing minjung (the people), a term that has been the source of multiple narratives in contemporary Korean history.

  The exhibition features a wide range of his works from his early study works (1954) to his new pieces (2015) for the sake of offering a comprehensive overview of his art and life spanning 60 years. The exhibition encompasses an extended arena of mediums including not only his main genre of painting but also sculpture (terra-cotta) and even installation, in particular shedding light on the gaze toward his times with his serial magnum opus such as <The Face>, <The Soul>, and <The Body>, all of which are intended to represent the joys and sorrows of the Korean people, transcending his personal agony.
