김병기 KIM, Byung-ki

  가나아트센터는 한국 추상미술 1세대이자 우리 현대미술의 이론적 기틀을 마련한 태경 김병기의 탄생 100주년 기념전을 개최한다. 김병기는 서양의 새로운 미술경향을 가까이 느낄 수 있었던 도쿄 아방가르드양화연구소에서 김환기, 유영국, 길진섭 등과 함께 수학하였는데, 이곳에서 에꼴드파리(Ecole de Paris)에서 활동한 후지타 쓰구하루를 통해 다다이즘와 초현실주의를 접하고 추상미술에 눈뜨게 되었다. 

 1965년 도미 이후 50년 만에 귀국한 김병기는 이번 전시에서 2014년 국립현대미술관의 개인전 이후 새롭게 작업한 신작들과 미공개작을 포함한 다양한 작품들을 선보인다. 최근 작품들에서 그는 ‘완성으로서의 미완’을 구현하고 있는데, 채색을 최소화하고 안료의 층을 얇게 하여 캔버스의 바탕과 작업의 흔적이 고스란히 드러나는 것이 그 특징이다. 100세를 넘긴 나이에도 불구하고 자신과 예술에 대한 통찰을 계속해 온 김병기의 이번 전시를 통해, 우리는 그의 말 대로“우리를 둘러싸고 있는 물질의 늪으로부터 빠져나올 수 있는” 길을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.

  Gana Art Center is pleased to present the 100th anniversarycommemorative exhibition of KIM Byung-ki, a first generation Korean abstract artist who provided a theoretical basis for Korean contemporary art. KIM enrolled in Tokyo Avant-Garde Western Art Academy where new Western progression could be experienced at a close distance, and studied with artists like KIM Whan-ki, YOO Young-kuk, and GIL Jin-sup. But it was not until he met Léonard Tsugouharu FOUJITA he learned of Dadaism and Surrealism, which opened his eyes to a world of abstract art. 

 This exhibition will feature paintings including recent works of KIM Byung-ki who has had his solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2014 after his return to Korea fifty years since he left for the United States in 1965. In his recent works, KIM has been implementing ‘completed as incomplete’, which is characterized by minimized strokes, thin layers of paint, exposed canvas space and visible traces of progress. Despite his age of over 100 years, KIM has continued a keen discernment of art and himself. This exhibition will be an opportunity for viewers to discover an “escape from the materialistic swamp that constantly surrounds us.”
