《백남준의 도시》는 비디오 시공간의 본질을 탐구했던 백남준의 사유를 바탕으로, 동시대 최첨단 기술이 만들어 내는 미디어의 다층적시공간을 살아가며 이를 예술로 구현하는 동시대 작가들을 조명한다.
비디오가 만들어 내는 시공간의 가능성을 탐구한 백남준, 몰입 기술의 기원을 통해 인간 인식 방식의 변화를 탐구하는 권혜원, 지구 멸종과 소멸의 역사를 되짚어 인류의 지속가능성을 질문하는 강이연, 기후위기에 대한 가상 시나리오를 통해 타자의 존재를 새롭게 상상하는 염인화, 자연과 기계가 뒤섞인 풍경을 통해 실제와 가상의 경계를 실험하는 구기정 등 참여 작가들의 작품은 비디오로 재구성된 세계로 서로 인과적으로 연결되지 않으면서도 동시에 발생하는 사건들로 얽힌 지금의 세계를 다시 바라보게 만든다.
What is the transcendent experience of time and space created by video in the era of “video immersion”? Taking as its starting point Nam June PAIK’s essential explorations of the time and space that video creates, this exhibition spotlights contemporary artists who are living in the multilayered video environments that today’s cuttingedge technology creates and transforming this experience into art. Nam June PAIK, who explored the temporal and spatial possibilities of video through large multi-television installations; Hyewon Kwon, who investigates changes in human cognition through the origins of immersive technology; Yiyun KANG, who retraces the history of extinction and annihilation on Earth to pose questions about human sustainability; Inhwa YEOM, who reimagines the existence of the Other through imaginary climate crisis scenarios; and Gijeong GOO, who experiments with the boundaries of the real and the virtual through landscapes blending nature with machinery. Their works—based on events that are simultaneous and non-causally connected in a world redefined by video—encourage us to reflect on our current moment through new eyes and realize how deeply interconnected we are.
