‘어제 안에 오늘-잊혀진 전쟁, 살아있는 기억’은 전쟁의 기억을 되살림으로써 전쟁에 대한 두려움을 일깨우기 위해 만든 전시는 아니다. 애초에 이 전시는 미국 보스턴대학 심리학과의 임램지 교수가 주관한 「재미동포들의 기억의 구술사 기획」에서 채록한 재미동포 개인들의 경험담을 바탕으로 기획한 멀티미디어 전시로부터 출발한 것이다. 부모세대가 한국전쟁을 겪는 동안 경험한 것을 더욱 깊이 있게 이해하려는 젊은 세대 미국동포들의 몇몇 개인적인 시도를 계기로 실현된 임램지 교수의 연구프로젝트는 현재 보스턴과 샌프란시스코 인근 지역에 살고 있는 세 세대에 걸친 재미동포들로부터 36편의 구술사를 채록하였는데 이 구술사들은 재미동포들이 끔찍한 내전이자 국제전의 참화를 공적인 방식으로 기억한 첫 번째 사례 중 하나이다. 이 이야기들은 또한 한국전쟁이 오늘날까지 개인과 가족, 그리고 공동체의 삶에 물려주고 있는 여러 층위의 유산을 보여준다. 이 구술사들은 미국의 역사기록과 대중의 의식 속에 존재하는 무관심에 도전하고 한국전쟁을 가시화한 것이다
　
Present Still Pasts Forgotten War, Living Memories

‘Present Still Pasts-Forgotten War, Living Memory’ is an exhibition to remind people about the stories of the war that evoke the trauma of the war. This exhibition originated from a multimedia exhibition that embodied the life stories from the Korean American Memories of the Korean War Oral History Project, directed by Ramsay Lim, a professor of psychology in Boston College. Motivated by the personal quests of several young Korean Americans for achieving a deeper understanding of their families’ experiences during the Korean War, this project recorded 36 oral histories from Korean Americans spanning over three generations who live in the Boston and San Francisco areas. These oral histories, as one of the first public records for remembering the calamity of the civil war as well as the international war experienced by Korean Americans, reveal the diverse levels of the legacy that was left to individuals, families, and the Korean American community. By this, they challenge the official American historical record as well as the indifference of the people to the war.
