광주비엔날레가 그 동안 전시를 통해 펼쳐온 현대미술의 소개, 확산, 수용의 통합적 역할은 단순히 세계미술의 흐름을 보여주는 차원을 넘어 새로운 문화의 물꼬를 터왔다. 더 나아가 새로운 예술적 감수성을 이해하고, 지역의 예술적 경험과 국가적, 국제적, 초국가적 대중, 작가, 큐레이터, 기관들과 그 밖의 많은 관계망들이 교차하는 연결고리를 만들어 왔다. 또한 광주비엔날레는 현대미술에 끼친 세계화의 영향을 분석하고 기존 국제 비엔날레들의 국가관에 기초한 비현대적인 체계에 도전하는 선도적 미술문화 현장을 지향하고 있다. 이번 광주비엔날레는 이러한 세계 현대미술 문화의 주축으로서 본연의 역할을 실현해내려고 한다.
2008광주비엔날레는 3개의 섹션을 유기적으로 연결하여 하나의 전시를 이루며, 비엔날레관을 중심으로 일부는 광주시내 요소에 분산 배치된다. 이 가운데 길 위에서(On the Road)는 최근 1년 동안 세계 곳곳에서 열렸던 전시에 대한 보고 형식으로 이루어지며, 제안(Position Papers)은 젊은 큐레이터들의 독자적 관점을 반영하는 전시이며, 끼워 넣기(Insertions)는 이번 광주비엔날레를 위해 기획된 일련의 새로운 프로젝트와 전시들로 이루어진다.
Annual Report : A year in Exhibitions
Bringing together a range of activities produced across the span of nearly eighteen months, Annual Report will serve as a hosting site, incorporating into its sequence of galleries and satellite venues activities ranging from performances, readings, film screenings, music, dance, theater, to exhibitions initiated between January 2007 and September 2008. From the obscure to the mainstream, from the local to the transnational, these activities can be understood as a chain of traveling cultural worlds and idioms, a network of incommensurable experiments in global culture. Employing the idea of the space of encounter, the biennale will explore the economy of global exhibition practices, setting up a soft porous line between context and practice, form and medium, artist and system, institution and locality. The exhibition program is composed of three interconnected components. On the Road consists entirely of traveling exhibitions that have been produced and shown elsewhere between 2007 and 2008, Position Papers will focus on new curatorial ideas, exhibition initiatives, and other proposals. Insertions will be based on a series of new projects commissioned specifically for the biennale. These new projects, to be realized across different media and disciplines, will serve as punctuation marks throughout the itinerary of the exhibition
