천재조각가, 현대조각의 거장이란 화려한 수식어가 뒤따랐던 로댕, 그가 작품에서 말하고자 했던 인간의 고뇌와 사랑이 고스란히 담긴 작품에 대한 전시가 서울시립미술관에서 열리고 있다. 본 전시는 파리 로댕미술관과 공동 기획한 로댕의 삶과 예술을 총체적으로 조명해보는 국내 최초의 회고전으로 로댕의 작품에 서려 있는 인간세상의 모든 얼굴뿐만 아니라 작가의 위대한 손이 남긴 흔적을 더듬어 보는 예술기행이다. 로댕의 대표작 <생각하는 사람>은 180cm 크기의 대형 채색 석고로 색다르게 선보이며, <청동시대>, <입맞춤>, <깔레의 시민>, <빅토르 위고 기념상>, <발자크>등 110여 점의 청동, 대리석, 석고작품과 40여 점의 종이작품까지 한자리에 모았다. 또한 본 전시 부제이기도 한 <신의 손>은 국내에 처음 소개될 뿐만 아니라 개관이래 처음으로 파리 로댕미술관을 떠나 보여지는 대리석으로 제작된 놓쳐서는 안될 작품이다. 이번 전시를 통해 우리가 흔히 알던 로댕을 넘어 진정한 로댕 예술의 진수를 흠뻑 느낄 수 있을 것이다.
French sculptor Auguste Rodin, who has been praised as “Michelangelo Reincarnated” or the progenitor of modern sculpture, successfully converted lifeless materials into sculptures imbued with delicate human feelings such as passion, agony, love and hatred. In the exhibition halls of Seoul Museum of Art, his works are presented celebrating the first retrospective of Rodin in Korea. Organized in collaboration with Rodin Museum in Paris, the exhibition is like a journey into his art world offering a unique opportunity to gain a thorough insight into life and career
of the artist.
One of the presented works, a symbolic and most beloved masterpiece, 《 The Thinker》 is a plaster statue executed by Rodin himself. Unlike the same piece in bronze to which the public feels familiar, this colored plaster work will give us a chance to see the difference between the two. Other works including over 110 sculptures made of bronze, marble and plaster such as 《 The Age of Bronze》, 《 The Kiss》and 《 Balzac》 are presented along with some 40 works on paper. Moreover, the title of both the exhibition and a sculpture, 《 Hand of God》 is displayed here in Seoul, leaving the street of Paris for the first time since the opening of the Rodin Museum in Paris.
At the exhibition, visitors will meet what has Rodin left behind, works executed in pursuance of realizing not solely the human figures but also the realm of God.
