그 동안 한국과 외국, 고미술과 현대미술을 아우르는 다양한 전시들을 선보여 왔던 삼성미술관 리움은 현대미술의 여러 양상을 조명하고, 동시대 미술의 흐름과 담론을 부각하는 ‘미래의 기억들’전을 선보인다.

회화, 조각과 같은 전통적인 미술은 아름답고 숭고한 절대적인 가치를 가진 것으로 숭배되어 왔다. 그러나 1910년대 마르셀 뒤샹의 출현 이후 1960년대에 팝 아트, 개념미술, 플럭서스 등으로 이어지면서 새로운 미술의 내용과 형태가 등장하게 되었다. 이번 전시의 제목이자 참여 작가의 로랑 그라소(Laurent Grasso)의 작품이기도 한 ‘미래의 기억들 Memories of the future’은 과거에는 불가능하다고 여겨졌던 미술의 영역을 탐구하고자 하는 현대미술을 상징하고 있다.

이번 전시는 경계를 넘어 끊임없이 새로운 영역을 탐구해 온 현대미술의 개념적인 측면을 강조하는 전시로 로랑 그라소, 창 킨-와, 소피 칼, 디르크 플라이쉬만, 마이클 린, 곽선경, 권오상, 잭슨홍, 신미경, 사사[44], 김홍석의 작품을 선보인다. 이들은 관객들로 하여금 예술작품, 작가 그리고 전시 공간과의 적극적인 소통과 참여를 유도하여 리움의 공간과 현대미술을 보다 친근하게 경험하고 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art presents ‘Memories of the Future’ which addresses diverse tendencies in contemporary art.
Art in the past—painting and sculpture, for instance—used to have fixed forms and subjects. Since the emergence of Marcel Duchamp in the 1910s and through the subsequent artistic movements such as Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and Fluxus in the 1960s, new contents and forms have come to constitute the new art. Memories of the Future—the title of the exhibition and also of a work by Laurent Grasso, one of the participating artists—symbolizes how contemporary art explores artistic realms that were believed to be impossible.
It is our hope that ‘Memories of the Future’ serves as an occasion to reflect on the new meanings of contemporary art, which has been transcending many boundaries and infinitely expanding. The exhibition is also an opportunity for the viewers to communicate with and participate in the works of art, the artists, and the exhibition spaces more actively, and thus to experience and understand contemporary art in a more intimate way.
