고 장욱진 화백의 20주기를 맞이하여 갤러리현대는 장욱진 미술문화재단과 공동주최로 ‘장욱진 20주기:장욱진’전이 열리고 있다.
한국 근현대미술사에서 독보적인 경지를 개척한 고 장욱진 화백의 작품에는 어린이·가족·나무·새 등 일상적인 이미지가 소박하고 정감 있게 표현되어 단순한 삶을 추구했던 작가의 모습이 그대로 반영되어 있다. 이번 전시에는 독창적인 회화세계를 구축한 장욱진 화백의 대표적인 유화작품 60여 점과 먹그림 10여 점이 출품된다.
<자화상(1951)>, <가로수(1978)>, <나무와 새(1957)>, <모기장(1956)> 등 40년대 후반부터 90년대까지 한 자리에 모이기 힘든 시대별 대표작들과 함께 그동안 개인에게 소장되어 공개되지 못한 미공개 작품 <소(1953)>, <반월(1988)> 등이 전시된다. 출판사 마로니에 북스는 장욱진 20주기를 기념한 장욱진의 영문판 화집을 출간하여 그 의미를 더했다.
이번 전시를 통해 갤러리현대는 장욱진 화백에 대한 대중적 관심을 이끌어내고 나아가 그의 작품세계에 대한 새로운 이해와 감상의 지평을 마련하고자 했다. 작은 캔버스 안에서 구축한 완벽한 화면에서 삶의 특수성과 보편성 모두를 관통하는 새로운 즐거움을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
Commemorating the death of the artist Chang Ucchin, GALLERY HYUNDAI organized a retrospective exhibition of the artist in collaboration with Chang Ucchin Foundation from January 14th to February 27th.
The exhibition presents one of the most unique and established Korean artist Ucchin Chang’s original artworks of everyday images of children, family, trees, and birds. His simple but yet emotional art works in this exhibition reflects on the artist pursuit of simplicity in life. This exhibition consists of more than seventy artworks of Chang, and is organized with the purpose of drawing public interest and attention to an artist who has made a distinctive mark in Korean art history, with an unique style that no other could mimic. In Chang's small but skillful paintings, you will be able to discover a new pleasure that penetrates both the conventional and personal lives.
