‘올해의 작가’란 국립현대미술관이 연령 및 장르를 불문하고 매해 한국미술계에서 가장 작품 활동이 두드러지고 창작의욕이 왕성한 작가를 선정한 것을 의미한다. 혜택은 선정된 다음 해에 유일하게 국립현대미술관에서 개인전을 개최해주는 전시제도로 1995년 처음 신설되었다. 작가들에게는 창작의지를, 관람객에게는 다채롭고 새로운 작가와 작품을 제공하는 기회를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
선정방식은 학예연구원 전원이 개인별 2인 이내의 작가를 추천하여 미술관 학예직으로 구성된 작가선정위원회에서 열띤 토론을 통해 후보자들을 심의하고 1인 1표라는 원칙 하에 여러 차례 지면 투표를 통해 최종 결정된다. 그동안 국립현대미술관은 1995-2010년까지 중견작가 부문과 원로작가 부문을 포함하여 총 23명의 작가를 선정하였다.
이번 전시는 올해의 작가 1995-2010년의 역사를 되돌아보며 앞으로의 방향을 짚어보고 공표하는 자리이다. 올해의 작가 23인의 대표작이 소개되며 이와 함께 개별 작가들의 독백을 담은 영상들이 함께 소개된다.
The Artist of the Year of National Museum of Contemporary Art is an annual prize presented to an artist for an outstanding artistic development and his creative passion, regardless of genres and age. It was first set up in 1995, and since then, the nominated artist has been given the chance to show a solo exhibition at NMCA. The prize has played the significant role in encouraging the artist's creative will and in providing the audience with the opportunity to appreciate the diverse and fresh presentation of contemporary art.
The nomination process involves the whole curatorial team - each curator recommends not more than two artists to the selection committee, and after intense discussions, the artist is voted for through a balloting system. Over the period of 1995-2010, the National Museum of Contemporary Art nominated a total 23 artists, including both mid-career artists and the elderly venerate artists.
This year's exhibition is a retrospective exhibition of the past 16 years'award winners for Artist of the Year. By bringing all of them together, the show will suggest and announce the future direction of the award’s purpose and the development of Korean contemporary art. The show will feature the representative art works of the 23artists and documentaries of the artists'individual narration of their art.
