신세계갤러리에서는 현대미술의 대가로 자리한, 1세대 재불(在佛) 한국작가들의 ‘1958 에콜 드 파리’를 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 1950년대 한국 전쟁 후, 프랑스로 건너가 유럽의 서정적 추상 운동의 경향을 직접 경험하였고 한국 미술이 유럽과 세계로 건너가는 데 다리가 되었던 작가들의 활동이 소개된다. 1958년에 프랑스에 머물며 한국적 추상미술을 열어나간 권옥연, 김환기, 김흥수, 남관, 손동진, 이성자, 이세득의 작품과 당시의 자료들로 구성되었다.
파리시기는 이들 작가에게 기법적 체험과 작가적 상상의 자유를 주었을 뿐만 아니라 한국적 정체성만으로 특정될 수 없는 작가 고유의 세계를 완성하는 고민과 탐색의 시기로 작품세계의 분절점을 이루는 매우 중대한 시기로 평가된다.
‘1958 에콜 드 파리’는 한국 현대미술 정착기를 풍미한 대가들의 전환기를 비교하며 볼 수 있는 흔치 않은 기회가 될 것이다. 전쟁의 비극을 넘어서 만난 꿈의 세계에서 꾸었던 꿈은 무엇이었나 상상해 볼 수 있는 시간이 될 것이다.
Shinsegae Gallery is pleased to announce ‘1958-Ecole de Paris’, an exhibition that aims to introduce the maiden generation of Korean artists in France. These artists have been identified as the masters of Korean Modern Art and moved to France during the 1950s & 60s following the Korean War. They instantaneously became members of what is known as ‘Ecole de Paris’ and aspired to private lyrical abstractionism. Subsequent to their return to Korea, their experience has formed the basis for accepting and developing Western Art in Korea. The exhibition features among others, Whan-ki Kim, considered by many to be the father of Korean Abstract Art as well as the early works and documents of Ok-yon Kwon, Heung-su Kim, Nam Kwan, Dong-chin Sohn, Se-duk Lee and Seund-ja Rhee.
These artists struggled to express their Korean identities in their art during their sojourn in Paris while using Western art technique. Consequently, the Paris Period was imperative to the establishment of their art world.
‘1958-Ecole de Paris’ is without a doubt a precious opportunity to encounter the early career masterpieces produced by this maiden generation of Korean artists while they were based in Paris. The exhibition offers a dream journey set in the art world of Paris as seen from the perspective of some Korean greats.
