곽인식, 이우환, 박서보, 이강소, 문범 등 모두 31명의 작가가 참여하는 ‘한국의 단색화’는 단색화에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시하고자 한다. 작가들은 전기와 후기로 나뉘는데, 이우환, 박서보, 이동엽 등 전기 단색화 작가들은 이번 전시에서 1970년대 초반부터 현재까지 단색화의 태동 이후 약 40여 년의 세월이 흐르는 동안 연륜에 값 하는 고도로 성숙한 독자적인 예술 세계를 보여준다.
전기 단색화 작가들이 유채를 비롯하여 아크릴 칼라, 먹, 연필, 한지, 석채, 철분 등을 사용하는 반면, 40대에서 50대에 걸친 후기 단색화 작가들은 이외에도 합성수지, 송진, 스테인리스, 인조진주, 반짝이, 플렉시글라스 등 산업재료를 사용하고 있다.
그동안 단색화를 가리켜 같은 현상임에도 단색조 회화, 단색회화, 단색평면주의, 모노크롬회화, 모노톤회화 등 다소 혼란스럽게 불러왔다. 통일을 기할 때가 왔지 않았나 싶다. 그리고 국제화 시대를 맞이하여 외국에 한국의 독자적인 브랜드를 소개하기 위해 이웃 일본의 ‘Monoha(物派)’나 이탈리아의 ‘아르테 포베라’처럼 외국에서도 통용될 수 있는 고유의 이름이 필요하다고 간주하여 단색화를 ‘Dansaekhwa’로 표기했다.
‘Dansaekhwa : Korean Monochrome Paintingʼ shows a new perspective on Korean monochrome painting. The works of 31 artists such as In-sik Quac, U-fan Lee, Seo-bo Park, Kang-so Lee, Moon Beom will be exhibited in this show. There are two groups of Dansaekhwa artists, the early and the later artists. The works of the early artists, such as U-fan Lee, Seo-bo Park, Dong-youb Lee, draw our attention as they showcase nearly 40 years of maturity, and the formation of an independent art world from the early 1,970s.
While the early Dansaekhwa artists used materials such as oil paints, acrylics, ink, pencil, traditional Korean paper, powder colour and iron, the later Dansaekhwa artists in their 40s and 50s, in addition, used synthetic resins, resin, stainless steel, faux pearls, sequins, Plexiglas and other industrial materials.
Until now we have been confusingly referring to the Korean Monochrome paintings with various different names such as monochromatic paintings, monochrome paintings, monochrome flat, and monotone paintings despite the fact that they all stem from the same phenomenon and concept. Thus, now seems to be the time to unite all the different terms through discussion. Moreover, as we greet the globalized world, it seems necessary to introduce the universal terms of Korea's independent brands such as Japan's ‘Monohaʼ or Italy’s ‘Arte Poveraʼ by naming Korea's Monochrome paintings as Dansaekhwa.
