만화와 현대미술을 대표하는 국내작가 27인의 작품을 한자리에서 만나는 ‘만화로 보는 세상’! 1970 - 80년대 명랑만화시대를 이끈 원로작가의 작품과 젊은 감각의 웹&카툰 작품, 그리고 만화 콘텐츠를 소재로 한 현대미술 작품 등을 함께 살펴볼 수 있는 전시이다.
만화는 대중과 가장 쉽고 편하게 소통할 수 있는 수단이다. 또한, 사회의 여러 현상을 대변하고 고발하며, 때로는 어른과 어린이들의 꿈을 표현하고, 각박한 현실 속에서 그들의 희망을 표현하는 독특한 세계도 갖고 있다. 현대 미술에서는 만화의 캐릭터로 젊은 작가들의 철학과 사고를 표현하고 상징하며, 현대미술에서 표현하기 어려웠던 여러 요소를 만화의 기법으로 더 쉽고 재미있게 보여주는 등 유용한 표현의 수단으로 인식되고 있다.
이번 전시는 아이부터 어른까지 그리고 일상과 예술을 아우르는 폭넓은 영역을 통해 세대 간의 공감대를 확장, 소통할 수 있는 따뜻한 공간의 장을 마련해 준다. 또한, 종이로 표현하는 아날로그적 감수성의 만화, 웹과 영상 매체에서 볼 수 있는 디지털 만화, 미술 장르 속에서 새롭게 구현되는 만화 등을 통해서 다양한 만화 콘텐츠를 새롭게 인식할 기회도 제공하고자 했다.
The Cartoon World is an exhibition of work by 27 leading Korean cartoonists and contemporary artists. On show are works by senior cartoonist who spearheaded Myeongrang Manhwa, or humorous, witty comics directed towards children between the 1970s and the 1980s; web cartoons with a young sense; and contemporary artworks addressing the content of cartoons.
A cartoon is a direct, fast means for communication with the public, where diverse social phenomena are represented or criticized, contemporary people and children’s frustrated dreams are expressed, and love, success, and hope in a harsh reality are depicted. Cartoons are credited by young artists as the medium to represent their art world. Young artists describe their philosophy and thought with cartoon characters, presenting things hard to express in contemporary art with comic techniques in an easy, interesting manner. A cartoon has already been regarded as a means of contemporary art.
The exhibition theme is cartoons for all generations sympathize and breathe with us, encompassing daily life and art. Through cartoons with an analog sensibility on paper, cartoons on the web and video, and cartoons in contemporary art, the show enhances and reviews the potential and value of cartoons at the boundary between daily life and art.
