국립현대미술관과 SBS문화재단이 공동으로 기획한 ‘올해의 작가상 Korea Artist Prize’는 역량 있는 작가들이 세계 미술계로 뻗어 나갈 수 있는 교두보를 제공하고자 마련된 제도이다. 새롭게 개편된 '올해의 작가상 2012'에 함께할 작가를 선정하기 위해 그간 10인의 국내외 미술인으로 이루어진 추천단과 5인의 국내외 심사위원의 노고가 있었다. 이를 통해 김홍석, 문경원?전준호(공동 작업), 이수경, 임민욱 4팀이 ‘SBS문화재단 후원작가’로 선발되었다.
전시는 단일한 주제로 묶이기보다는 개별 작가들이 제공하는 4개의 프로젝트로 구성된다. 작가들의 평소 관심이 반영된 4개의 개인전이라 해도 무방한 이번 전시에서 작가들은 우리 사회가 안고 있는 다양한 문제를 각기 다른 촉수를 이용해 제시하고 있다. 때로 그것은 개인사의 문제로 보이기도 하고, 어떤 경우에는 예술의 가치나 존재방식에 대한 질문으로 다가오기도 하며, 또 어떤 경우 그것은 우리가 처한 상황을 다른 방식으로 인식할 것을 제안하기도 한다. 이를 통해 우리는 ‘지금?여기’ 대한민국의 오늘을 살아가는 40대 작가들의 시대의식을 발견할 수 있다.
Co-organized by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, and the SBS Foundation, the annual ‘Korea Artist Prize’ is dedicated to promoting influential Korean artists to realize their potential in the international art scene. For the newly organized 2012 Korea Artist Prize, artists were selected and reviewed by a committee of 10 art people and a panel of 5 judges from Korea and abroad. Four recipients including Gimhongsok, Yeesookyung, Minouk Lim and artist duo MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho were selected as ‘SBS Foundation Sponsored Artists,’ and are featured in the 2012 Korea Artist Prize Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, from August 31st to November 11th, 2012.
the exhibition consists of four individual projects with distinct themes rather than being organized under one theme. This exhibition - which is more like a group of four solo exhibitions - presents each artist’s distinct perception and interpretation of various issues in contemporary society. The works present personal issues, ask questions about the value or significance of art, and sometimes propose alternative ways of looking at the way we live.
Above all, the exhibition presents five Korean artists in their forties, who are living ‘right now and right here’ in Korea, and how they see the world.
