@What : 신중국미술 @What : New Contemporary Art from China

‘@What : 신중국미술’은 한중수교 20주년을 기념하여 아르코미술관 중국미술관이 공동으로 기획한 전시다. 신중국미술전은 전 세계적으로 확산하여 위용을 떨치고 있는 글로벌화와 도시화의 영향하에 급격한 변화를 겪고 있는 중국 현대사회의 일면을 고찰한다. 비약적인 발전을 거듭하고 있는 정보통신기술과 그로 말미암은 매체파급력의 확장은 중국 사회의 역동성을 주도하며 대중의 인식 구조를 변화시키고 있다. 거대한 사회 변혁이 야기하는 다양한 삶과 인식의 변화는 중국의 신세대 예술가들에게도 중요한 영감을 불어넣어 주고 있다. 

 이번 전시에 출품된 작품들은 90년대 이후 개방과 자본화에 대한 충격을 주로 표현해왔던 전 세대와는 달리 변화된 환경에서 느끼는 친숙함과 이질감을 동시에 경험하고 있는 동시대 중국의 젊은 세대들의 감수성을 반영하고 있다. 새롭게 부상하는 중국의 신진 작가들로서 구성된 이번 전시는 기존 중국현대미술에 대한 이해의 범위를 확장시킬 것이다. 

 Co-organized by Arko Art Center and National Art Museum of China, @What: New Contemporary Art from China celebrates the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and China. The exhibition delves into the rapidly-changing Chinese contemporary society under the influence of globalization and urbanization. The swiftly advancing information technology and the subsequent expansion in media is leading the dynamicity of Chinese society and changing the cognitive structure of Chinese people today. Such diverse changes in life and thought brought about by immense social transformations inspire and motivate the new generation of Chinese artists. 

 Unlike the artists of previous generation whose works were mainly a response towards China’s economic reform and opening up in late-1990s, the works in this exhibition reflect the sensibility of young Chinese artists today who are experiencing a sense of both familiarity and difference in times and environment of change. This exhibition presents new promising artists of China, and hopes to expand the public understanding of Chinese contemporary art.
