미국미술 300년 Art Across America

 국립중앙박물관에서 개최하는 ‘미국미술 300년, Art Across America’는 18세기 미국의 식민지 시기부터 20세기에 이르기까지 미국미술의 역사적 흐름을 조망하는 첫 대규모 전시이다. 168점의 대표적인 미국 회화, 공예품들이 소개될 이번 전시는 지난 300년 동안 미국미술이 이룩한 예술적 성취가 고스란히 담겨 있다. 잭슨 폴록, 앤디 워홀 등의 현대미술의 대표작가들뿐만 아니라 존 싱글턴 코플리, 토마스 콜, 윈슬로우 호머, 토마스 에이킨스 등 미국미술사의 주요 화가들의 작품이 한국에 선보인다.

 이번 전시는 아메리카의 사람들, 동부에서 서부로, 삶과 일상의 이미지, 세계로 향한 미국, 미국의 근대, 1945년 이후의 미국미술 등 6개의 섹션으로 구성되었다. 각 섹션은 미국 역사의 주요 흐름을 관통하고 미국미술의 각 시대적 특징을 담았다. 또한, 6개 주제로 구성된 공예 작품들은 미국의 장인들과 디자이너들의 높은 예술적 수준을 보여주면서 미국미술의 시대와 지역적 특색을 제시한다. 미국미술 300년을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 이번 전시는 미국의 역사와 전통, 그리고 그 과정에서 미국미술이 지녔던 역할을 이해하는 계기가 될 것이다.

 ‘Art Across America’ is the first major survey of historical American Art to take place in South Korea. The exhibition consists of a total of 168 works which include American paintings, as well as decorative arts and design, from the collections of four U.S. institutions, the exhibition debuts at the National Museum of Korea, in Seoul. Not only does the exhibition show familiarmodern artists such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock but it also displays works by earlier significant artists in American art history such as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Eakins for the first time in Korea. 

 The exhibition introduces American art and identity through six sections of paintings: American People, American Landscape: East to West, Daily Life in Art, Cosmopolitan America, Modern America and American Art after 1945. Vignettes of decorative arts and design will be paired with each section to exemplify vernacular traditions, creative achievements of early settlers and indigenous Americans, as well as popular modern design.
