무라카미 다카시의 수퍼플랫 원더랜드 Takashi in Superflat Wonderland

전통 일본화 전공으로 박사 학위를 받은 무라카미 다카시는 일본의 전통미술과 대중문화를 원천으로 ‘수퍼플랫’의 개념을 새롭게 제안하며, 서구 중심의 현대미술을 아시아적 감성으로 혁신한 대표적인 작가로 평가받고 있다. 또한, 엘리트 문화와 하위 문화, 예술과 상품의 위계가 평면화된 현대의 자본주의 문화에 주목하여 루이뷔통과의 협업이나 ‘카이카이&키키’ 회사설립 등 전방위적인 수익추구형의 문화사업을 예술작업의 목적으로 전개하고 있다.

 이번 전시는 국내에서 최초로 열리는 무라카미 다카시의회고전으로, <727-727><Contact> 등의 대표작은 물론 Mr. DOB, Miss Ko², Kaikai& Kiki, Tan Tan Bo 등 작가의 주요 캐릭터와 전통적인 미의 상징으로서의 꽃, 시선과 존재의 문제를 제기하는 눈 등의 디자인 모티브, 최근의 자화상 캐릭터에 이르기까지 총 30여 점을 선보이며, 회화, 조각은 물론 풍선, 영상, 사진, 벽지, 커텐, 카펫 등 다양한 매체로 표현된 작가의 독특한 캐릭터들이 구성하는 원더랜드를 탐사하는 즐거움 속에서 동시대의 역사와 사회, 문화를 반영하는 팝아트의 비평적 역할을 되돌아보고, 더 나아가 아시아 작가로서 세계 속에 우뚝 설 수 있었던 성공적인 생존전략의 사례를 만나 볼 기회가 될 것이다.

 

As the first retrospective of Takashi Murakami held in Korea, this exhibition allows one to experience and examine the oeuvre of Murakami by featuring a broad panorama of the artist’s creative endeavors including his early figures, his representative works such as 727-727 and Contact and his recent paintings. 

 This exhibition showcases around thirty works by Murakami: his iconic characters such as Mr. DOB, Miss Ko²,Kaikai& Kiki and Tan Tan Bo;his flowers as the symbol of traditional beauty; his design motifs including the eye through which he delved into the questions of gaze and existence; his pop icon recently developed into a form of self-portraiture. In this wonderland constructed with Murakami’s unique characters in a variety of art forms and mediumsincluding painting, sculpture, video art, photography, balloons, wall paper, curtains and carpets, one is given an enjoyable opportunity to explore such a world of wonders and at the same time reexamine the critical attitude of Pop Art that reflects on the historical, social and cultural aspects of our times.
