88서울올림픽 개최 25주년을 기념하여 개최된 이 전시는 힘과 아름다움이란 서로 상반된 개념을 주제어로 하고 있다. 페어플레이를 기본으로 하는 스포츠와 창조력을 바탕으로 한 예술이 어떻게 만날 수 있는가란 도전적인 질문으로부터 출발한 이 전시는 힘을 단순히 물리적 에너지가 발산되는 현상으로 보지 않고 ‘아름다운καλός’과 ‘좋은άγαθός’이 조화된 상태, 즉 고대 올림피아 제전이 추구했던 ‘칼로카가티아καλοκαγαθία’로 파악하고자 했다. 힘은 또한 보다 좋은 사회를 위한 인간들의 활동을 포함한다. 아울러 이 전시는 하나의 도전적인 질문을 던지고 있다. 도대체 아름다움은 무엇인가? 또 그 아름다움은 어디에 있는가.
칼로카가티아는 이 질문에 대한 많은 답 중의 하나가 될 수 있다. 성형기술의 보편화, 유전공학의 발달 등으로 신체는 더 이상 한 인간의 정체성을 드러내는 척도가 될 수 없는 시대가 되었다. 더욱이 곧 도래할 포스트휴먼 시대에는 신체의 변형과 교체는 물론 복제인간이나 사이보그 등도 등장할 것이다. 이런 변화무쌍한 시대에 힘과 아름다움을 주제로 내세운 이 전시는 인간이 지닌 능력이 아
름다움으로 승화될 때 인간의 존재의미와 가치도 그만큼 더 커질 수 있으리란 기대를 반영하고 있다.
This exhibition to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul addresses two keywords with contrasting meanings, strength and beauty. In this exhibition questioning how sports based on fair play can meet art based on creativity, we intend to grasp strength as a harmonious state between kalos(καλός, beauty) and agathos(άγαθός, good). Together these
are the quality of kalokagathia(καλοκαγαθία, the traits and character of nobility or goodness) that ancient Olympiads pursued, rather than seeing ‘strength’ simply as a physical phenomenon. The notion of strength also includes human activities for a better society. In addition, this exhibition poses defiant questions: what is one earth beauty? And, where is the beauty?
Kalokagathia can be one of the numerous answers to these questions.
As plastic surgery becomes common and genetic engineering evolves, the body is no longer the measure of one’s identity. In the post-human age to emerge soon, deformation and replacement of the body will be pervasive alongside cloned humans and cyborgs. This exhibition dealing with the themes of strength and beauty in this ever-changing era reflects our expectation that the meaning and value of humans can be enhanced when human faculties are raised to a state of beauty.
