오승윤 O Syng-Yoon

 

 회화를 통해 한국의 자연과 전통문화를 오랜 시간 연구한 작가 오승윤(1939-2006)의 개인전이다. 오승윤은 선조들이 조화로운 삶을 기원하며 즐겨 사용했던 오방색과 십장생 등 전통문화 속에 담긴 상징적 사물과 표현들에서 한국적 정신의 뿌리를 찾아 이를 현대화하고자 노력하였다. 

 오승윤은 1964년 홍익대 회화과를 졸업하였고, 1980년 프랑스로 건너가 아카데미 드 라 그랑드 쇼미에르(Académie de la Grande Chaumière)에서 연수하였다. 작가는 한국회화의 전통적 색채를 살린 특유의 작업들을 유럽 미술계에 과감하게 발표하였고, 1996년 몬테카를로 국제현대미술전에서 특별상을 받는 등 유럽 화단의 주목을 받았다. 특히 1990년대 후반부터 시작된 <풍수(風水)> 시리즈는 오승윤의 가장 대표적인 작품들로, 한국 고유의 무속 신앙과 도교 사상에 깃든 전통적 상징체계들이 자연주의 사상과 절묘한 조화를 이룬 작품들이다. 

 이번 전시에는 그가 타계 직전까지 열의를 다하였던 이들 <풍수> 시리즈 40여 점을 비롯하여 초기작인 정물화, 누드, 민속화 등 총 50여 점의 작품이 전시된다. 작고 이후 8년 만에 오승윤의 작품 세계를 망라하는 소중한 자리가 될 것이다.

 Gana Art is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of O Syng-Yoon(1939-2006) who was fascinated with the the beauty of Korean nature and traditional culture all through his life. O tried to find the root of Korean spirit in the symbolic objects and expressions in Korean traditional culture which were favored by Korean ancestors in the hope of living the harmonious life, such as the Five Cardinal Colors and the ten traditional Symbols of Longevity.

 O graduated from Hongik University in 1964 and moved to France in 1980 to study at Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He presented a series of unique works marked by the traditional colors of Korean painting in the European art world and attracted public attention by receiving the special prize in the International Contemporary Arts Prize of Monte-Carlo in 1996. In particular, the series titled “Wind and Water” that started from the late 1990s is regarded as his most representative works, for its exquisite harmony between Naturalistic thinking the traditional symbols of Korean shamanism and Taoist thought. 

 This solo exhibition will present more than fifty works including 40 paintings from the Wind and Water series that O worked with great enthusiasm to his last breath and his other earlier works such as still lifes, nudes, and folk paintings. It will provide a valuable opportunity to see his entire art world for the first time after eight years after his death.
