화이트블럭아트센터는 갤러리에서 미술관으로 새롭게 출발하면서, 재개관 기념 특별전으로 서용선 개인전을 개최한다. ‘역사적 상상_서용선의 단종실록’이라는 제목으로 개최되는 이번 전시에서는, 서용선 작가가 28년째 지속하고 있는 단종 관련 신작들이 대거 전시된다.

 

역사적 사건과 현대 도시인의 삶이라는 두 가지 테마를 가지고 있는 서용선 작가가 처음 단종에 포커스를 맞추어 작품을 시작했던 것은 1986년으로, 이후 수차례의 전시를 통해 계유정난과 단종복위운동에 따른 수많은 인물과 사건들을 그려 왔다. 이번 전시는 단종 관련 사건의 주변 인물로 알려졌던 안평대군에 포커스를 맞춘 신작과 더불어, 역사적 사건이 발생했거나 흔적이 남아 있는 장소를 그린 ‘역사 풍경화’ 작품들이 다수 선보인다.

단종 관련 신작들을 감상할 기회이면서 동시에 수십 년간 지속해 왔던 역사화의 의미를 총체적으로 정리하는 전시로, 작품뿐 아니라 작가가 모든 자료가 함께 공개되어 있다. 그의 답사 과정을 영상으로 담은 기록물과 더불어 역사서들, 단종 관련 연구 서적 등을 볼 수 있어, 오랜 시간 동안 지속해 왔던 단종 테마에 대한 작가의 관심의 깊이를 짐작할 수 있을 것이다.

Transforming from a gallery into a museum, White Block Art Center presents Yong Sun Suh’s solo exhibition ‘Historical Imagination_The King Danjong Stories by Suh Yong-Sun’ as a special inauguration event. In this exhibition, a great number of new paintings of Danjong, which the artist has been working on for twenty eight years, will be shown to the public.

Yong-sun Suh works with two artistic themes : historical events and the lives of the people in the modern city. Since first beginning his works on King Danjong in 1986, Suh has illustrated numerous historical figures and events related to the gye-yu-jeong-na—a genocide brought on by Suyangdaegun, Danjong’s uncle who later took the throne as King Sejo—and the King Danjong restoration movement. This solo exhibition at the White Block includes new works on Ahnpyeongdaegun (the brother and rival of Suyangdaegun), who is a well-known figure in these incidents, and a number of ‘historic landscapes’ representing the places of the events or traces of the events that can be found.

This solo exhibition is not only an opportunity to look at Yong-sun Suh’s new pieces, but also a retrospective of the artist’s decades of working on historic paintings. Accompanying the artworks in the exhibition will be various related materials and references. Documentaries of the artist’s visits to historic sites, history books, and research on King Danjong will help one understand the artist’s in-depth approach to his long-time subject of King Danjong.
