대구미술관은 경북 청도 출신으로 파리에 거주하며 국제적으로 활동하고 있는 작가 이배(1956- )의 개인전 ‘하늘로 흐르는 강’을 열고 있다. 이배는 30년 가까이 숯을 재료로 드로잉, 캔버스, 설치 작업과 같은 다양한형태의 작업을 해오면서 자신의 영역을 확장했다. 작가가 파리에 정착한후 지금까지 숯을 주재료로 활동하는 데에는 숯이 지니는 그 탁월하고 변화무쌍한 질감이 다양한 작품 세계를 가능하게 하고, 흑(黑)의 깊이와 풍요로움을 발현해 주기 때문일 것이다. 작가에게 숯은 단순한 작품 재료를 넘어 작업의 본질로 여겨지며 결국 작가 자신의 문화적 배경과 정체성을 담보하는 매개물이다.

이번 전시는 1990년대 작품부터 최근의 작품까지 평면 회화, 데생, 설치 작품 등 약 50여 점으로 구성되었다. 작가의 의도를 충분히 반영하여 여러 개의 공간에 시기와 테마, 형식을 구분하여 설치했으며, 특히 공간에 대한 작가의 탁월한 해석과 감각이 한층 돋보이고 있다. 또한, 숯을 매개로 독특하고도 명상적인 예술 세계를 펼쳐 보이고 있는 이번 전시는 바쁘고 지친 현대인들에게 잠시 발걸음을 멈추고 자신과 주변을 되돌아볼 수 있는 시간을 제공할 것이다.

Daegu Art Museum presents Lee Bae’s solo exhibition, The Streams Rise in the Firmament. Lee Bae (b.1956), who was born in Kyung buk Cheongdoh and currently resides in Paris, has been actively involved in the international art scene. Lee Bae has marked charcoal art as his domain for nearly 30 years creating a diverse range of drawings, canvas works and installations. The ultimate reason for Lee’s obstinate loyalty to charcoal stems from the superior versatility of its texture that is capable of diverse expressions of the work, as well as its ability to embody a certain depth and richness of heuk (“black”, “黑”). In this way, charcoal becomes more than simply a medium and the artist develops his choice of medium to highlight what is intrinsic in his artworks. In result, his medium is deemed as something akin to collateral for securing the artist’s

unique cultural context and identity within.

This exhibition showcases 50 artworks made from the 1990s to the present, including paintings, drawings and installations. The exhibition also aims to fully reflect the artist’s intentions in installing the artworks in many different spaces according to thematic, chronological and formal variance. This exhibition will put a spotlight on the artist’s supreme sense and interpretation of space. Using charcoal as his medium, the artist unfolds a distinctive and meditative artistic world. This exhibition will provide people in this busy and exhausting contemporary society a moment to pause, and reflect on themselves and the world surrounding them.
