조민석 : 매스스터디스 건축하기 전/후 Minsuk Cho : Before/After Mass Studies Does Architecture

개관 이후 현대미술의 최신경향을 소개하는데 집중해온 삼성미술관 플라토는 건축가 조민석의 개인전 ‘매스스터디스 건축하기 전/후’를 개최하면서 현대미술과 함께 연동하며 서로에게 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 건축영역을 새롭게 조망하는 기회를 갖는다.

건축하기의 ‘전’과 ‘후’에 집중한 이 전시는 그간 조민석의 사무소이자 건축하기의 화두이기도 한 ‘매스스터디스’가 구상하고 상상해온 모든 것, 건축물이 세상에 나오기 ‘이전의 세계’와, 그 상상의 세계가 무수한 타협과 충돌 끝에 실현된 ‘이후의 세계’를 병치한다. 특이한 점은 일반적인 건축전이 건축가의 타협하지 않는 비전의 완성을 보여주듯, 모델과 드로잉의 완결판으로서 최상의 상태에서 마무리되는 것과는 달리, 이 전시는 건축물이 건축가의 손을 떠나 사용자들과 시간에 의해 다소 드라마틱하게 변모하는 모습까지를 다룬다는 점이다. 이 전시는 건축가 조민석의 지난 12년간의 작업을 통해 동시대 정신에 충실한 한 건축가의 실천 과정을 개괄해 보고, 더불어 건축의 담론과 비평이 더욱 활발해지는 계기를 마련하리라 기대한다. 

PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art presents Before/After Mass Studies Does Architecture, a solo exhibition of the architect Minsuk Cho. 

Juxtaposing the perspectives of “before” and “after”, the exhibition introduces the architectural vision of Cho’s firm “Mass Studies”, in the world of imagination “before” construction and the reality “after”, negotiated through countless conflicts and compromises. Unlike most architecture exhibitions that emphasize the triumph of the architect’s uncompromising vision through perfectly organized models and drawings, this exhibition will trace time as the structures leave the hands of the architect and become dramatically transformed by their users. While presenting a comprehensive view of Minsuk Cho’s exceptional works over the past twelve years, the exhibition hopes to provide a forum for reinvigorating a critical discourse on contemporary architecture.
