본 전시는 장-프랑수아 밀레(Jean-François Millet 1814-1875) 탄생 200주년을 기념하여 보스턴미술관이 4년에 걸쳐 심층적으로 연구하고 기획한 전시이다. 미국과 일본전시를 거쳐 한국에서 피날레를 장식하는 본 전시는 세계에서 가장 많은 밀레 작품을 소장하고 있는 보스턴 미술관의 소장작품으로 구성된 전시다. 2014년 1월부터 시작된 미국과 일본전시를 통해 무려 100 만 명이 관람한 이 전시는 밀레의 주옥같은 걸작들을 통해 명작의 감동을 만나는 전시가 될 것이다. 국내 최초로 소개되는 밀레의 대표작이자 보스턴미술관 4대 걸작인 <씨 뿌리는 사람>, <감자 심는 사람들>, <추수 중에 휴식(룻과 보아스)>, <양치기 소녀>를 중심으로 밀레와 함께 바르비종 (Barbizon)과 퐁텐블로(Fontainebleau)에서 활동한 장-밥티스트-카미유 코로(Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot), 테오도르 루소(Theodore Rousseau)와 밀레의 영향을 받은 작가 쥘 뒤프레(Jules Dupré), 레옹-어거스틴 레르미트(Léon-Augustin Lhermitte) 그리고 그 어떠한 전시에서도 볼 수 없었던 클로드 모네(Claude Monet)의 초기 작품까지 감상할 수 있다. 본 전시를 통해 밀레와 그가 이끈 바르비종파 미술운동의 흐름과 작품을 살펴봄으로서 19 세기 사실주의 화가 밀레가 남긴 미술사적인 의미와 그를 통해 인상주의가 탄생하게 된 배경까지 알게 되는 기회가 될 것이다.

 To celebrate the 200th year of Jean-François Millet's birth(1814-1875), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has put in 4 years of extensive research and planning into this exhibition. This exhibition in Korea is the finale of “Millet, Barbizon and Fontainebleau” which has been showcased throughout North America and Japan. It composes collections from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston which processes more of Millet's artwork than anywhere else around the world. What began on January 2014, spreading throughout America and Japan with over 1 million people visitors, this exhibition of Millet's masterpiece will surely leave a lasting and memorable impression. For the first time ever in Korea, the exhibition will center on the four major works from Millet's Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: <The Sower>, <Potato Planters>, <Harvesters Resting(Ruth and Boaz)> and <Young Shepherdess>. The exhibition will also feature artworks from Barbizon school who worked with Millet at Fontainebleau including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Theodore Rousseau, and those influenced by Millet such as Jules Dupré, Léon-Augustin Lhermitte and Claude Monet whose earliest artwork cannot be found in any other exhibitions. The paintings reveal the heart of the artists in full detail which leads to the birth of Impressionism in 19 century.
