경기 팔경과 구곡: 산·강·사람 Mountains, Rivers, and People: Eight Views and Nine-bend Streams of Gyeonggi

경기도미술관은 2015년 특별기획전으로 ‘경기 팔경과 구곡: 산·강·사람’전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 경기도의 명소와 실경을 그린 조선시대의 그림부터 현대 작가들의 경기도 풍경화까지 포괄하는 통시적 전시로,‘팔경(八景)과 구곡문화(九曲文化)’에 기반을 둔 명승과 실경 그림의 전통을 조명하고 근·현대로 이어지는 경기지역 풍경화의 풍성함을 살펴보고자 기획되었다. 경기도는 한반도 중부 서쪽에 위치한 넓은 지역이며, 고려시대 이래로 약 1천 년 동안 역사의 중심 무대였다. 그 때문에 뛰어난 자연 경관과 함께 역사 유적지가 많고 이것을 그린 작가와 작품이 넘쳐난다. 그래서인지 정선과 김홍도를 비롯한 조선시대 화가에서부터 나혜석과 박상옥 등 근대작가, 현재 한국을 대표하는 원로 및 중견작가, 그리고 현대적 미감과 실험성을 보여주는 작가까지 60여 명에 가까운 이들의 100여 점이나 되는 작품이 연출되는 대규모 전시가 되었다.

모두 5부로 구성된 전시의 제1부는 경기도 31개 시·군에서 각기 홍보하는 각 지역의 8경 또는 9경이나 유적지, 관광명소를 소개하고 아울러 수원팔경, 부계팔경, 벽계구곡 등 각 지역의 명승명소 그림을 보여준다. 계속해서 제2부 ‘ 산은 강을 품고’, 제3부 ‘강은 바다를 향하네’, 제4부 ‘사람은 마을과 도시를 만들고’, 제5부 ‘갈라진 땅 다시 만나리’라는 소제목으로 전시가 펼쳐진다. 경기도가 지닌 자연적·인문적 환경인 산·강·바다·사람·마을·도시·분단을 주제어로 삼고 출품작들을 연계시키며 이야기를 엮어내고 있는 서사성(敍事性)을 띤 전시이다.

Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art is presenting ‘Mountains, Rivers, and People:Eight Views and Nine-bend Streams of Gyeonggi’. This is a diachronic exhibition highlighting the true-view land scapes and scenic places of Gyeonggi that are considered ‘eight views and nine-bend streams’ featuring the art works ranging from the Joseon period to the contemporary.

Gyeonggi province dominates the central region of the Korean Peninsula. Since the Goryeo Dynasty, Gyeonggi has been at the center of Korean history for more than a thousand years, and thus has many historical ruins, beautiful sceneries, and artworks that portray these assets. This exhibition has gathered the works based on the theme of Gyeonggi’s natural beauty by 60 eminent artists, including JEONG Seon and GIM Hong-do of the Joseon era to modern artists NA Hye-seok and PARK Sang-ok, as well as contemporary artists. The exhibition is comprised of five sections. The first section introduces the eight views or nine-bend streams, historical ruins, and scenic places of each of the 31 cities and city districts of Gyeonggi Province. Sections two to five are given the themes of ‘Mountains encompass rivers,’ ‘Rivers flow into the sea,’ ‘People build villages and cities,’and ‘The divided land shall be reunited,’ respectively. The exhibition has a narrative that is linked by key words related to its natural and humanistic surroundings, such as mountains, rivers, seas, people, villages, cities and division, and each key word is illustrated with relevant artworks.
