2015 에꼴 드 이응노-파리동양미술학교 École de LEE Ungno -Académie de Peinture Orientale de Paris

이응노미술관은 2015년 아카이브 전시로 ‘에꼴 드 이응노-파리동양미술학교’전을 개최한다. 이응노의 교육 활동에 주목한 이번 전시는 이응노의 첫 교육활동이었던 ‘고암화숙(顧菴畵塾)’부터, 1964년 설립되어 현재까지 운영되고 있는 ‘파리동양미술학교’, 그리고 이응노 작고 이후 제자들의 활동까지 망라하여 고암 학파(École de Lee Ungno) 의 정신을 살펴볼 수 있도록기획되었다. 1930년대 일본 유학을 통해 본격적으로 ‘한국화란 무엇인가?’고민한 이응노는 1945년 서울에 ‘고암화숙’을 개설하며 실경사생을 위주로 한 새로운 형태의 교육방식을 도입하였다. 도불 후에는 1964년 프랑스파리의 세르누쉬미술관(Musée Cernuschi) 내에 유럽 최초의 동양미술교육기관인 ‘파리동양미술학교’를 세워 ‘유럽에 동양미술을 전파하고 한국을 알리기’ 시작한다. 이응노는 파리동양미술학교에서 유럽인들을 대상으로 사군자, 서예, 산수화 등 동양화의 기초와 이를 기반으로 한 창작활동까지 이끌어내는 스승이었다. 이응노의 교육활동이 담긴 희귀 기록물들과 동양화교습그림으로 구성된 이번 전시를 통해 한국인 최초로 서화를 가르친 이응노의 정신과 업적을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.

The Lee Ungno Museum’s 2015 archival exhibition École de LeeUngno Académie de Peinture Orientale de Paris traces LEE Ungno’s teaching activities at different places, from his first academy, Goam Studio, to the Parisian institution, Académie de Peinture Orientale de Paris, which opened in 1964 and is still running today. The show also features his pupils’ various activities following his death in order to look at the spirit held in the socalled école de LEE Ungno (the school of LEE Ungno.) Having earnestly explored the ‘identity of Korean art’ since the 1930s, when he moved to Japan, LEE opened Goam Studio in 1945 in Seoul to provide life drawing classes, which was then a new form of art education in Korea. In 1964, after flying to France, he established within Musée Cernuschi the Académie de Peinture Orientale de Paris, the first European institution for Oriental painting, to introduce Oriental painting to Europe and bring awareness to Korea. There, LEE taught the basics of Oriental art such as calligraphy, Four Gentlemen, and shan shui, and encouraged his students to proceed to creating their own works based on the art. Comprising rare materials documenting his teaching, including paintings he made for his students, the exhibition will give you an insight into LEE Ungno’s artistic spirit and his achievements as the first Korean to teach Oriental painting in Europe.
