우현 고유섭(1905-44)은 1927년 경성제국대학 철학과에서 미학과 미술사를 전공하였다. 1933년 개성부립박물관장으로 부임한 후 우리미술사연구에 주력하였으며, 많은 글을 발표하였다. 그의 한국도자 관련 저서와 글은 고려청자가 중심을 이루고 있다.

『조선의 청자』는 일문판으로 1939년 초판본, 1942년 재판본이 발행되었으며, 고유섭이 생전에 발간한 단행본이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 이 책은 청자란 무엇인가, 청자의 명칭, 청자의 발생, 청자의 종류 등 8장으로 구성되어있다.

고유섭은 청자를 비색청자, 상감문양, 회고려(繪高麗) 등 장식기법을 기준으로 분류하였다. 시기별로는 중국 자기를 모방했던 고려비색시대, 조선 독자 양식을 발달시켰던 상감청자시대, 중국자기의 영향이 증가한 지나남북요혼효시대(支那南北窯混淆時代), 도자가 쇠퇴한 잡요시대(雜徭時代) 4시기로 구분하여 고려시대부터 조선시대까지 다루었다. 또한 7장 청자의 전세(傳世)와 출토에서는 세세한 전승과정과 출토정황을 상세하게 다루었다. 이는 양식사적 분석 외 다양한 해석적 방법론을 제시하고자 했음으로 보인다.

제자 진홍섭은 1954년에 『조선의 청자』의 번역서『 고려청자』를 발간하였다. 그는 역자서에 발간의 경위와 함께 새로운 자료를 추가하였고, 세월에 흐름으로 인해 해석이 달라지는 부분이 있어도 원문을 그대로 수록했음을 밝혔다.

김달진미술자료박물관은 『조선의 청자』외에 고유섭의 유고집 『조선미술문화사논총』(1949), 『한국탑파의 연구』(1954), 『전별의 병』(1958), 『한국미술사급미학논고』(1963), 『 조선화론집성 상/하』(1965), 『한국미술문화사논총』(1966), 『 송도의 고적』(1977), 『 한국미의 산책』(1977)을 소장하고 있다.

Celadon Ware From Chosun

Go Yu-Seob, 1942 


The first Japanese edition of <Celadon Ware From Chosun> was printed in 1939, followed by a second edition in 1942 while the author Go Yu-Seob was still alive. It includes eight chapters discussing celadon ceramics, their names, discovery and varieties.

In 1927 Woohyon Go Yu-Seob (1905-44) who studied Aesthetics and Art History in the Philosophy Department of Kyongseong Imperial University became the first scholar in that field. In 1933 he was appointed as Director of Keseong Prefectural Museum and devoted himself to the study of Korean art history. He has published numerous texts on Korean ceramics and Koryeo celadon ware.

Currently Incheon Cultural Foundation holds annual Go Yu-Seob Scholastic and Artistic awards.
