The Family of Man - Grand
Photography Exhibition
United States Information Service, 1957
In 1955 for the 25th
anniversary of the New York Museum of Modern Art its Photography Department
(chief curator Edward Steichen) organised an exhibition titled <The Family
of a Man> (1995.1.26-5.8). Under the slogan “Men Are One”, it featured 503
pictures from 273 photographers from 68 countries depicting the happiness and
sorrows of the four phases of human’s life. Photographs from Korea were also
included.
The exhibition was organised with
the support of the US Overseas Information Bureau and travelled to over 40
countries. At first Korea was excluded from the itinerary but upon photographer
Im Eung-Shik's numerous requests to the US Embassy's Culture and Information
Department the exhibition eventually opened in Korea, too.
As a result, numerous changes in
the world of Korean photography occurred such as the organising of Dong-A Photo
Contest and the establishment of photography section in the National Exhibition
(Gukjeon).
This catalogue was published in Korea in 2018.
