호암미술관은 한국현대조각의 전개에 중추적 역할을 한 1세대 여성 조각가 김윤신의 대규모 회고전 《합이합일 분이분일》을 개최한다. 김윤신은 1970년대 후반부터 집요하게 나무를 재료로 자연의 아름다움과 생명의 본질을 탐구해온 조각가이다. 이번 회고전에는 망실된 1960년대 이전의 작품을 제외하고 현존하는 가장 초기작인 1960년대 파리 유학 시절의 판화와 이후의 실험적인 평면작품들, 그리고 60대에 들어 몰입하기 시작한 다채로운 회화까지 170여 점을 선보인다.
전시의 부제인 ‘합이합일 분이분일(合二合一 分二分一)’은 잘 알려진 김윤신의 작업 이념에서 따온 것으로, 작가와 재료가 하나가 되어(合)작품이라는 또다른 하나가 탄생(分)한다는 의미이다. 이는 조각을 제작하기 전, 나무를 오랜 시간 살피고 그 안에서 형태를 이끌어내는 제작 과정을 통해 도달한 작가의 직관적 통찰로 1970년대 후반부터 현재까지 작업의 근간을 이루고 있다. 이번 전시는 작가 생애 최초의 대규모 회고전으로, 김윤신의 작업을 하나의 조형 세계로 이해할 수 있도록 평면과 조각이 한데 어우러지도록 구성하였다.
Hoam Museum of Art is pleased to present 《KIM Yun Shin: Two Be One》, a major retrospective of the pioneering Korean sculptor KIM Yun Shin. Featuring approximately 170 works—including sculpture, painting, drawing, and printmaking—the exhibition offers the most comprehensive survey to date of the artist’s seven-decade career, showcasing her practice from the mid-1960s. In the 1970s, a pivotal period for Korean modernist sculpture, KIM emerged as a distinctive voice within the field. Working primarily with wood, her practice emphasized a direct engagement with the material and highlighted its inherent structure and vitality. As one of the first generation of women sculptors in Korea, KIM forged an independent path within a predominantly male-dominated field and gained recognition in the Korean sculpture scene. Bringing together works from the 1960s to the present, this first major retrospective of KIM Yun Shin’s career invites viewers to experience her practice as a unified sculptural universe.
