국립현대미술관은 영국 작가 데이미언 허스트의 개인전 《진실은 없어 그러나 모든 것은 가능하지》를 개최한다. 허스트는 삶과 죽음을 대하는 인간의 복합적인 감정과 욕망에 주목했다. 인간은 태어나면서 부터 이미 근원을 알 수 없는 불안과 죽음의 공포를 느끼는 존재이다.
그리고 그런 인간의 특성이 역설적이게도 영생을 향한 욕망, 초월적 존재에 대한 믿음, 의학과 과학에 대한 맹신, 수집과 통제에 대한 강박적 집착을 낳는다. 허스트는 그러한 인간의 욕망이 낳은 사회적 구조자체에 관심을 가진다.
쓰레기 더미에서 찾은 오브제를 콜라주한 초기 작품에서부터 서양미술사의 흐름을 따르기도 하고 뒤집기도 한 유쾌한 발상들을 거쳐, 삶과 죽음을 처절하게 직면하게 하는 상어 작품 등이 전시된다. 또한 인간의 생명을 지속해주리라는 과학적 믿음을 상징하는 약장이 마치 종교적 성물처럼 전시되는가 하면, 수 천 개의 다이아몬드가 박힌 해골, 박제된 나비를 사용한 삼면화를 통해 아름다움의 잔혹한 실체를 마주하게 만들기도 한다.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea presents 《Damien HIRST: Nothing Is True But Everything Is Possible》. HIRST’s practice focuses on the complex emotions and desires with which humans confront life and death. From the moment they are born, humans carry an unexplainable anxiety and fear of extinction. Paradoxically, these conditions give rise to the desire for eternal life, belief in transcendental forces, blind faith in medicine and science, and obsessive impulses toward collection and control. HIRST directs his attention to the very social structures.
The exhibition spans early works made from objects collected from piles of discarded materials, playful ideas that both follow and subvert the trajectory of Western art history, and the iconic shark installation that confronts viewers with the stark reality of life and death. It also presents works in which medicine cabinets are displayed like religious relics, and triptychs composed of preserved butterflies, which compel viewers to confront the cruel reality behind beauty.
