전북도립미술관은 2021년부터 ‘전북미술사 연구 시리즈’를 통해 지역 미술을 발굴하고 그 가치를 정립해 왔다. 2026년, 일곱 번째 에디션은 전북 정읍 출신의 작가 전수천(1947-2018)을 조명한다. 그간 전통과 지역성에 기반을 두었던 연구 시리즈는 이제 그 범위를 확장하여, 재료와 매체의 다양성을 넘어, 여전히 유효한 시대적 질문을던지는 전수천의 세계로 진입한다.
《언젠가 거인은 온다》는 전수천의 1989년 회화에서 차용한 것으로, 완결된 메시지보다 질문에 가까웠던 그의 예술적 태도, 그리고 작업 전체를 관통하는 시간적, 존재론적 인식을 은유한다. 그리하여 전시는 ‘전수천은 무엇을 했는가’라는 서술을 넘어, 그의 작업이 ‘무엇을 흔들었는가’에 주목한다. 나아가 전수천의 작업이 만들어낸 의미를 동시대적 시각으로 다시 읽기를 시도한다. 전시는 자연, 문명, 사회(자본)와 그 근저에 흐르는 인간의 실존적 조건이라는 네 개의 축으로 구성된다.
Since 2021, the Jeonbuk Museum of Art has been discovering regional art and establishing its value through the “Jeonbuk Art History Research Series.” In 2026, the seventh edition highlights JHEON Soocheon (1947–2018), an artist from Jeongeup, Jeonbuk. The research series, which had until now been grounded in tradition and regionality, now expands its scope to enter the world of JHEON Soocheon, who poses still-valid questions of the era beyond the diversity of materials and media.
Borrowed from JHEON’s 1989 painting, <Someday, the Giant Will Come Here> is a metaphor for the artist’s artistic attitude, which was closer to questions than completed messages, and for the temporal and ontological awareness penetrating his oeuvre. The exhibition thus focuses beyond the narrative of what JHEON Soocheon did and on what his works “shook.” Further, it attempts a rereading of the significance JHEON’s art has created with a contemporary perspective.
The exhibition consists of the four axes of nature, civilization, society (capital), and human beings’ existential conditions running at their base. Nature imbued us with vitality, civilization awakened intellect and thought, and society (capital) overlaid us with competition for survival and the rule of efficiency.
