플라토
지난 5월 재개관을 맞아 플라토는 그 첫 전시로 스페이스 스터디를 개최한다. 14명으로 구성된 이번 전시의 참여 작가들은 각자의 방법으로 공간과 장소의 경계에 대해 사유하며 기억 속의 장소이자 새로운 도전의 공간인 플라토에서 다양한 공간 연구를 시도하여 흥미로운 결과물을 제시한다.
김도균, 장성은, 정재호가 플라토의 공간을 세밀하게 탐색하고 측정함으로써 미지의 전시공간과 마주했을 때 느낄 법한 일종의 ‘공간공포’를 극복해낸다면, 김수자와 김민애, Sasa[44]는 플라토의 공간이 함의한 역사·장소성·기능의 의미를 재해석하고 확장한다. 안규철과 박준범, 김무준과 정소영은 플라토의 공간을 보편적인 미술관 공간으로 일반화하여 현실공간과 유리된 화이트 큐브의 아우라를 해체하고, 김인숙, 구동희, 이불, 노재운은 플라토에서 촉발된 공간과 장소에 대한 관심을 근대역사, 현대사회, 증강현실의 공간으로까지 확장한다.
스페이스 스터디전은 플라토의 전시공간 자체를 탐색의 대상으로 삼아 재개관의 의미를 확장할 뿐만 아니라, 공간에 대한 포괄적인 탐색을 통해 이미지와 스펙터클이 주도하는 현대미술의 빈 공백을 재탐사하고 있다.
For its inaugural exhibition, PLATEAU is pleased to present Space Study, featuring works by 14 artists proposing their diverse and unique studies on the conceptual boundary of space and place.
As KDK, Sung-eun Chang, and Jae-ho Jung thoroughly examine and measure the spaces within PLATEAU in order to overcome the kind of 'horror vacui' one may feel when encountered with the unfamiliar exhibition space, Soo-ja Kim, Min-ae Kim and Sasa[44]reinterpret and expand the implied significance of PLATEAU's history, site-specificity, and function. Kyu-chul Ahn, June-bum Park, Mu-jun Kim and So-young Chung translate PLATEAU into a standard museum space as they deconstruct the aura of the white cube disconnected from reality, while In-sook Kim, Dong-hee Koo, Lee Bul and Jae-oon Rho branch out to the historical, contemporary and augmented reality triggered from their interest in the space and site of PLATEAU.
Space Study not only expands the significance of the reopening by considering PLATEAU's exhibition space itself as the object of investigation, but also hopes to reexamine a void within contemporary art today dominated by images and spectacles.
