올해 탄생 100주년을 맞는 남관(1991-1990)은 역사적 상흔이 내포된 유적이나 한자를 연상시키는 상형 문자와 같은 형태 그리고 한국의 탈을 연상시키는 마스크 등의 화제(畵題)를 통해 자신만의 독특한 회화 세계를 구축하였다. 남관은 1954-67년 파리에 머물던 시기, 권위 있는 살롱전인 살롱 드 메에 다수 초대되고, 1966년 프랑스의 망통 회화 비엔날레에서 1등 상을 차지하며 유럽 화단에 이름을 알렸고, 사후에는 국내 서정 추상미술작가로 그 명성을 이어가고 있다. 화면 깊숙이 스며드는 푸른 색조와 콜라주 등의 기법을 응용하여 우연으로 만들어진 형상을 통해 명상적이면서도 환상적인 화업(畵業)을 완성한 남관은 수화 김환기와 함께 한국 추상미술을 확립한 거목으로 자리매김하고 있다.
환기미술관은 수화 김환기가 만난 사람들의 두 번째 전시로 남관 탄생 100주년을 기념하는 ‘념.상.환상(念.像.幻想)’을 개최한다. 동양적 사유를 모태로 한 그림에 대한 열정과 상념[念] 등이 고스란히 투영된 형상[像]들을 그의 대표 유화작품과 드로잉 등을 통해 소개한다.
This year marks the memorial exhibition for the 100-Year Anniversary of Nam Kwan's birth. He was born in 1911 and stayed in Paris 1954-1967. In 1958, beginning with Salon de Mai's invitation, he was invited to hold 5 exhibitions. His winning of First Prize in Biennale of Paintings, Menton in 1966 led him to various exhibition and invitation to the famous European painting circle. His art world was based on symbolic shapes such as historical remains, Korean traditional masks and hieroglyph-like Chinese character. Nam Kwan had a unique matiere of multiple effects of collage and lyrical blue and is one of the first generation of Korean modern abstract artists, alongside Kim Whanki.
Whanki Museum opened the special exhibition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Nam Kwan's birth on November 11th 2011, and it is the second exhibition in the series about Suhwa Kim Whanki's people. You can see Nam Kwan's works, which reflect his deep thoughts and artistic passion, at Whanki Museum until January 15, 2012.
