김환기 탄생 100주년 기념 Ⅰ : 어디서 무엇이 되어 다시 만나랴 The Centennial Celebration of Kim Whanki's Birth Ⅰ: Where, in What Form, Shall We Meet Again

 2013년 탄생 100년을 맞이하는 수화 김환기(1913-1974)는 타고난 예술가적 기질과 재능, 불굴의 도전정신으로 한국 미술계의 아방가르드와 추상미술의 선구자가 된, 20세기 우리나라의 대표적인 예술가이다. 김환기는 산, 달, 강, 매화, 구름, 백자항아리 등 한국의 자연과 전통기물을 소재로 민족적 정서를 아름답게 조형화하였고, 말년 뉴욕시기에 이르러 조형의 기본요소인 점點을 통해 더욱 함축적이고 절제된 조형언어로 작품세계의 정점을 이룬다.

 본 전시는 수화의 시대별 작품세계를 키워드로 연결하고 유화, 과슈, 드로잉, 오브제 등을 통해 김환기의 삶과 예술을 반추해본다. 그의 최초 추상작품인 <집>, 대한민국 근대문화재 등록작품 <론도>를 비롯한 1963년 상파울루 비엔날레 출품작인 <섬의 달밤>, <운월>, 1970년대 작 <우주>, <어디서 무엇이 되어 다시 만나랴> 연작 시리즈 등과 함께 그의 일생을 따라가 볼 수 있는 사진과 기록자료, 작가의 유품을 총망라하여 보여준다. 망향의 애틋함과 인간을 향한 흠모를 감동적인 예술작품으로 승화시킨 천상의 예술가, 김환기가 노래한 ‘시詩정신’의 작품세계를 음미할 수 있는 전시이다.

 Suwha Kim Whanki(1913-74), who received the 100th birthday in 2013, is a great artist became the spearhead of avant-garde and abstract art in the 20th century Korean art world through his inborn talent and indomitable determination. He represented Korean sentiment from the nature of Korea and traditional object such as mountains, the moon, rivers, plum blossoms, clouds, white porcelain jar, and etc. In his New York Period, he completed his abstract art with more abstracted and moderated formative language through a fundamental formative unit, dot.

 This exhibition binds his works with key words and ruminates the life and art world of Kim Whanki through a representative group of 70 art works such as oil paintings, drawings, objects, and so on. His first abstract work House, Rondo designated as a Korean Cultural Property, Moon Night in Island and Cloud and Moon exhibited in the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1963, Universe made in the 1970s, Series of Where, in What Form, Shall We Meet Again, and as well as pictures, records, and relics that document his life journey are presented in this exhibition. This exhibition will provide a meaningful opportunity to understand a celestial painter, Kim Whanki who sublimated his homesickness and compassion for humankind imbued his work.
