환경과 자연, 인간의 관계를 다각도에서 고찰하는‘오래된 미래_Ancient Futures’전은 진보를 향한 인류의 오랜 역사 중에 맞이한 현재와 미래를 동시대 미술로 돌아보자는 제안이다. 언어학자이자 사회운동가인 헬레나 노르베리 호지의 동명 에세이로부터 제목을 인용한 이번 전시는, 자연과 인간의 관계를 규명하는 다양한 시각을 통해 예술과 환경, 자연, 인간의 상호의존적인 관계를 총체적으로 조망하여, 쉼없이 진보를 향해 달려온 인간의 역사가 직면한 현실을 되짚어보고 잃어버린 가치를 성찰하는 기회를 마련하고 있다.
경고와 교훈의 거창한 메시지보다는 자연과 인공이 뒤섞인 오늘의 현실을 동 시대 미술의 목소리로 표현함으로써, 생명은 무엇인가, 자연과 인공의 경계는 어디인가, 삶과 죽음의 경계는 어디인가, 이상향이란 존재하는가 등과 같은 근원적인 질문을 던지고, 과학기술문명에 대한 낙관적인 믿음을 바탕으로 '진보'를 향해 바쁜 걸음을 재촉해온 인간의 역사적 전통에 대해 의문을 제기하는 동 시대 미술가들의 다양한 목소리를 담고 있다.
The title of this art show which examined human relationships with the environment and nature from various angles is appropriated from the essay of an environmental activist-cum-linguist, Helena Norberg Hodge, Ancient Futures. This exhibition proposes to look at the present and future of humankind based on man's long history and tradition of pursuing "progress." Through this art show, we intend to retrace the paradoxical reality we humans face this is an opportunity to reflect on lost values and shed light on interdependent relations between art, environment, and man.
This exhibition is designed to question our perception of reality, gradually growing insensitive to a warning that the time we survive in this land is limited, noting the relationships between nature and man. This show is not intended to convey any enormous warning or didactic messages, but to pose several questions with the voice of ontemporary art: What is life? Where are the boundaries between nature and art? Where are the lines between life and death? Does any utopia really exist? This art show encapsulates a wide variety of voices in contemporary art, simultaneously questioning the human history and tradition that has sought progress and our confidence in science and technology.
