‘2009 구스타프 클림트 한국전’은‘황금빛 비밀: 토탈아트를 찾아서’라는 주제 아래 클림트의 초기 작품에서부터 전성기 작품인 풍경화 및 여인이미지로 의 작업행로에서 감추어졌던 비밀을 추적해 나간다. 이러한 비밀을 밝혀나가는 데 있어 예술개념 토탈아트는 중요한 열쇠가 된다. 토탈아트는 아르누보, 유켄트 스틸과 같은 예술운동에서 추구했던 개념으로서 회화, 조각, 건축, 실내장식 그리고 공예에 이르는 장르들의 통합적 과정을 통해 현실과 환영의 성공적인 융화를 뜻한다.
토탈아트의 절정은 <베토벤프리즈>로서, 이 작품은 건축, 회화, 공예, 음악, 일상에 이르기까지 예술의 전 분야와 일상이 하나의 주제(베토벤)하에 이루어진 대표작품이다. 이 작품을 기점으로 클림트의 응용미술 및 다양한 총체적 예술에 대한 개념이 풍경화와 여성이미지로 이어진다. 클림트의 여성이미지는 팜므 파탈이라고 하는 문학적 개념을 시각적으로 표현하는 것에서 한걸음 더 나아가 토탈아트라는 예술적 행위를 화면으로써 표현해 낸다. 이번 전시는 대표작 <유디트1>, <이담과 이브>등을 통해 클림트의 여성이미지를 통해 부각되는 사랑의 주제가 오늘날까지도 현대인들에게 감동으로 다가오는 이유를 알 수 있을 것이다.

‘Gustav Klimt in Korea 2009’ comprehends Klimt’s entire artworks from his early works to the most highlighted works such as landscape and women’s portraits under the theme of “The Golden Secret: In Search of Total Artwork”. The exhibition opens a path to trace the secret of Klimt’s art life and the “Total Artwork” concept plays the vital key to reveal this secret. “Total Artwork”is one of the art movements along with Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. It represents harmony of reality and illusion through integration of fine arts, sculpture, and architecture.
The climax of the “Total Artwork” is which includes all types of art under one united theme, Beethoven. Starting from this point, Klimt’s belief on the “Total Artwork” followed on to the landscape and women’s portraits. His women’s portraits translate the literary concept of Femme Fatale into visual terms. From Klimt’s representative artworks such as ＜Judith1＞, ＜Adam and Eve＞ and all other women’s portraits in this exhibition, the visitors will learn the reason why ‘love’ still moves people’s emotion until today.
