삼성미술관 플라토는 2015년의 첫 기획전시로 ‘그림/그림자’를 개최한다. 국내외 미술계에서 주목받는 차세대 화가들을 소개하는 이번 전시는 뉴미디어와 대규모 설치작업이 주류를 이루는 현대미술에서 회화의 의미를 재조명한다. 플리니우스의 <박물지>는 고대 그리스의 한 여인이 곧 떠나갈 연인의 그림자를 벽에 손으로 그린 것이 회화의 기원이라고 기록했다. 이는 분명 허구적인 신화에 불과하지만, 무한한 이미지가 생산, 소비되는 이 시대에 회화의 의미를 사유하는 새로운 출발점이 될 수 있다. 회화는 ‘재현’이라는 차원을 넘어 실재와 환영, 현실과 욕망 사이에서 자신의 위치를 상정하고 드러내는 행위로서 이해할 수 있으며 오늘날 회화의 존재 이유를 역설한다.

이번 전시에 참여하는 12명의 작가 역시 서로 다른 주제와 스타일로 작업하면서도 공통적으로는 현실을 마주하고 인지하는 하나의 태도이자 비전으로서 회화의 가능성을 모색한다. 수 세기에 걸친 매체의 유산을 동시대 맥락에 전략적으로 개입시키는 이들의 작업은 회화적 표현의 다양한 실험을 통해 새로운 방향성을 제시할 것이다.

PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art presents Tracing Shadows, a group exhibition of twelve artists whose painting practice actively explores new possibilities for the medium in an art world dominated by installation and new media. Pliny the Elder’s Natural History recounts the origin of painting in a story of an ancient Greek woman tracing the shadow of her lover on the wall. Although this tale is merely groundless, it nevertheless provides a critical point of departure in reassessing the significance of the medium in the digital age. Since the ancient times, this legend has inspired generations of artists in redefining painting beyond simple mimesis, as an act of negotiating a stance between desire and reality, that still resonates its relevance today.

While the artists in the exhibition work in vastly different subjects and styles, they altogether aim to explore this possibility of the painting as a means of engaging with the contemporary reality. Reconciling the historical legacy of the medium with the present, the exhibition hopes to envision new perspectives for painting within the rapidly transforming terrain of contemporary culture.
