이탈리아 리보르노 태생의 파리의 이방인 아메데오 모딜리아니(Amedeo Modigliani 1884-1920)는 35년의 짧은 생을 살면서 400점이 채 못 미치는 유화작품만으로 20세기 미술사의 한 획을 그은 에콜드파리(Ecole de Paris)의 대표화가이자 파리 몽파르나스의 전설로 기록 된 화가이다. 모딜리아니는 요절한 비운의 화가 전형이다. 그의 마지막 연인 잔느(Jeanne)와의 격정적 러브스토리는 예술가로서 그의 드라마틱한 삶에 대한 세인의 관심을 끌 만했고 삶의 고뇌와 예술적 번민에 찌든 채 35세로 마감한 짧은 생은 그로 하여금 반 고흐와 같은 요절한 천재 화가의 반열에 올려놓았고 상식을 파괴한 독특한 인물 표현방식은 그를 신비에 가득 찬 예술가로 기억되게 만들었다. 영화 같은 그의 짧은 인생이었지만 예술가로서 모딜리아니는 삶의 고통과 남녀 간의 사랑의 감정을 열정적으로 느끼며 표현하고자 한 화가였으며 인간의 심오한 내면세계를 자신만의 양식을 통해 화폭에 담으려 했던 인류에 대한 무한한 애정을 지닌 휴머니스트이자 인물화가였다.

세계 유수의 20여 공공미술관 소장작품과 일반 관람객들이 쉽게 접할 수 없었던 개인소장 20여 곳을 포함하여 전 세계 40여 소장처로부터 모딜리아니 원화 작품을 한자리에 모은 이번 전시는 그가 남긴 그리 많지 않은 작품의 희귀성과 천정부지로 치솟는 작품가격에 비추어 볼 때 모딜리아니 전시사상 유례없는 기념비적인 전시가 될 것이다.

Amedeo Modigliani(1884-1920), a bohemian artist based in Paris, who was born in Livorno of Italy, is regarded as the legend of Montparnasse among the artists of the group Ecole de Paris. Modigliani is thought to have marked an epoch in the history of art, with only less than 400 pieces of work he left behind during 35 years of tragically short life. Modigliani can be considered the epitome of an artist who lived a tragic life and died prematurely. His last love affair with a young girl named Jeanne, and the tragic ending of their relationship was enough to draw public attention to the dramatic life he lived. 35 years short life that was worn out by anguish and anxiety of the earthly life placed him among the genius artists like Vincent Van Gogh, and his own individual style of portraying

human forms by breaking the convention made him remembered as an artist surrounded by myths. Even though his life was short like a film, Modigliani was the artist who truly wanted to feel and express the agony of life and the passionate love above all. He was a humanist and a portrait artist who had a strong affection for humans. This is a retrospective exhibition of Modigliani that gathered outstanding works from all around the world in one place including over twenty world’s prominent art museums and approximately twenty private collections that were hardly open to public. Judging by the rarity of not so many artworks that he had produced in his lifetime and his soaring art prices each year, this will be an unprecedented and monumental exhibition in Korea.
