<서울미술대전>은 서울시립미술관이 1985년 이후 매년 정기적으로 개최해 온 연례전시로, 2004년부터는 회화, 조각, 공예, 판화 각 부문별로 특화시켜왔다. 제23회를 맞는 <2008서울미술대전-한국현대구상회화의 흐름>展은‘서양화 구상회화’부문을 집중 조명한다. 이번 전시의 초대작가들은 국내의 대표적인 구상회화 작가로서 현재까지 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 50대 이상의 중견 및 원로작가 68인이다. 이번 전시에서는 구상에 대한 개념 시비는 접고 현상에 초점을 맞추어 구상 내부의 여러 경향, 즉 <재현과 실재>, <변형과 양식>, <일상과 환영>이라는 세 개의 섹션별 구성을 통해 구상회화의 의미를 다각도에서 바라보고 있다.
미술가들의 분포 면에서 구상계열의 미술가 인구가 가장 많은 것이 우리의 미술계 구조이다. 구상계열은 양적인 측면에서 뿐 아니라 내용면에서도 다양한 차원을 형성하고 있음은 물론이다. 우리 미술에서 구상계열이 너무 빈약하다는 평가를 받는 현실적 인식은 구상 내부의 다양한 인자를 개발하고 가다듬는 노력이 부재하기 때문이 아닌가 한다. 서양화가 이 땅에 유입된 지 1세기를 맞는 시점에서 서양화의 근간인 구상미술의 오늘의 모습을 점검해보는 것은 우리 미술의 정체성을 가다듬는 또 하나의 작업이 될 것이다.

The Seoul Art Exhibition is an annual art show regularly organized by the Seoul Museum of Art since 1985. It has been organized into sections specializing in painting, sculpture, craft, and print since 2004. This year's show marking the 23rd of its kind highlights figurative painting. Those invited to this show are 68 of Korea's representative mid-career and senior figurative artists who are still active now. Shunning any debate on the concept of figuration, this exhibition is intended to examine various aspects and phenomena of figurative art. The meaning of figurative art is viewed from diverse angles through its three sections: Representation and Reality, Deformation and Manner, and Life and Illusion.
Just like in other countries' art worlds, there are the largest number of figurative artists in the Korean art scene. This figurative art genre shows many diverse aspects not only in terms of quantity, but also in terms of content. At this point in time, almost one century has passed since Western painting was first introduced to Korea. It is obvious when we shed light on figurative art today, the foundation of Western painting is crucial in forming Korean art's identity.
