괴물은 고금을 막론하고 작가의 상상력 속에서 꾸준히 탄생되어 왔다. 괴물로 외화된‘불협화음적인 시선 Dissonant Visions’을 통하여 관람객들의 상상력의 지평을 넓히고 현대미술의 새로운 영역을 경험할 수 있도록 기획된 전시이다. 급변하는 현대사회의 복잡하고 다양한 미술 경향을 읽어내는 숨겨진 코드 중 하나가 바로‘불협화음(Dissonance)’이라고 할 수 있으며, 이는 우리 시대의‘괴물’로 나타나게 되는 것이다.
괴물은 19세기 이전까지만 하더라도 시각적으로 추하거나 공포스러운 것이라기보다는, 악덕·광기·비이성·위반 등 정신적이고 도덕적인 일탈을 공중 앞에 드러내보여 경고로 삼아야 하는 사람을 의미했다. 자연적으로 생성된 것이 아니라, 인간의 문화(culture)와 기술(art)이 만들어 낸 근대의 지식의 산물인 괴물은 모두 당대의 역사적 맥락에서 타자로 표상된 존재라는 특성을 지닌다. 현대사회의 재앙적 현실과 미래에 대한 예측 불가능성과 더불어 인간 존재의 불안정성이 나날이 고조되고 있다.‘ 하이브리드’의 세계 속에서 기존의 합리적 질서와 가치는 혼미를 거듭한다. 현대 미술에서 다양하게 표상되는 괴물의 형상을 통하여 우리들 현대인의 내면 깊이 존재하는 비인간적인 야만성을 성찰할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
Throughout the ages, monsters have been created through the imagination. Artists have employed monster-images as metaphors for dissonance that derive from a clash between the world and an individual's value system, a disapproval of or disobedience toward established reason, order, or the system, and discord between the individual and social ego. Dissonance is one of the many concealed codes for reading our age's rapidly changing, complicated, diverse artistic tendencies. This code can be presented in 'monster' images. The common denominator we find in work by the 21 artists in this exhibition is ‘dissonant visions’, externally presented by through the code 'monster'.
The possibility of disaster, unpredictability of the future, and human instability, has risen within contemporary society. Reasonable order has lost its value in our hybrid world. We expect through this exhibition viewers to have a meaningful opportunity to reflect on inhuman brutality, deep within the contemporary human self.
