백남준 탄생 80주년 기념전 ‘광:선 백남준 스펙트럼’은 소마미술관 내 상설전시관인 백남준비디오아트홀 재개관과 더불어 올림픽공원 몽촌해자에 설치되어 있는 세계 유일의 백남준 야외 레이저작업 <올림픽레이저워터스크린 2001>을 포함한 소마미술관 소장품, 그리고 백남준의 예술세계를 조망할 수 있는 미디어아트, 드로잉, 판화 등을 통해 미디어아트의 창시자이자 세계적 예술가인 백남준과 소마미술관의 역사적인 연관성을 소개하고자 기획되었다.
이번 전시의 하이라이트인 올림픽레이저워터스크린 2001은 올림픽의 상징인 오륜마크와 태극기의 4괘 문양, 하늘을 운행하는 별들의 움직임과 그 흔적들을 담아낸 작품으로서 본 전시가 전달하려 하는 백남준 예술의 절정체이자 핵심이라 할 수 있다. 본 전시에서는 세계 최초로 공개되는 백남준의 커뮤니케이션/인스트럭션 아카이브와 컨셉 드로잉 170여 점을 포함하여 백남준의 싱글채널 비디오, 비디오 조각, 비디오 설치, 레이저 작업, 오브제, 판화 등 총 240여 점을 소개한다.
Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Nam June Paik’s birth, Seoul Olympic Museum of Art(SOMA) has organized a special exhibition titled ‘Nam June Paik SPECTRUM’ to convey the historic relationship between Paik, father of video art, and the inception of SOMA whilst celebrating the reopening of the museum’s Nam June Paik Video Art Hall. The exhibition unveils dynamic spectrum of Nam June Paik’s magnificent oeuvre by presenting the complete range of the late master’s works from media art, drawings, prints, single channel videos, video sculptures, and installations to SOMA’s own collection of the artist including <Olympic Laser Water Screen 2001>(2001), and the <Megatron>(2001).
Olympic Laser Water Screen 2001, the highlight of the exhibition, is comprised of spectacular laser animation drawings of the Olympic emblem, the four trigrams of Taegeugki(the national flag of Korea) which symbolize universal movements, and the tracks of stars moving through the sky, projected onto rushing streams of fantail shaped water fountain at the Olympic Sculpture Park’s Mongchon Moat. ‘Nam June Paik Spectrum’ presents a total 240 pieces including 170 pieces from his communication/instruction archive and concept drawings that have never been exhibited before.
