‘2012 여수국제아트페스티벌’은 격년제로 열리는 여수의 문화예술행사로서 올해 제4회를 맞이하여 국제전시인 본 전시 '장소의 긍지'와 한국 작가들로 구성된 특별전시 ‘아트로폴리스’로 총 20개국 320여 작가의 작품을 대대로 선보인다.
GS칼텍스 예울마루에서 열리는 ‘장소의 긍지’는 고정된 의미의 플레이스(어떤 곳, 위치, 포인트, 자리)와 전환될 수 있는 포지션(위치와 태도, 선호도)으로서의 장소(정신적, 심리적, 자연적, 지리적, 정치적, 공공적, 개인적)를 다양하게 표현된 현대미술로 연출한다. 여기에 장소는 공간과 달리 홀로 있지 않고, 특정한 사람(들)과 이벤트(사건)가 함께 만들어나가는 개념으로, 기억의 운영에 의해 정체성이 부여된다는 것을 전제로 하고, 지명화나 의인화될 수 있는 확장된 개념을 함축하여 장소의 기능성( purpose)과 지역성(topos)과 이성과 신성(logos)을 함께 조망해보는 시각적 축제이다.
‘2012 Yeosu International Art Festival’ is the largest and the most significant bi-annual cultural art event produced in the city of Yeosu. Celebrating its 4th term, YIAF is proud to present an international exhibition titled ‘Pride of Place’ showcasing 86 artists from 20 countries and three Korean exhibitions titled ‘Artropolis’ presenting 240 artists from all regions of South Korea.
Housed in GS Caltex Yeulmaru, magnificent new multipurpose art and performance complex built in Yeosu, ‘Pride of Place’ aims to introduce New and Expanded Perspectives on the notion of Place in Contemporary Art with works that cover all genres, media and styles. The festival shows visually places of purpose, places of topos, and places of logos as well as between and lost places. The exhibit raises the key question, “where are you?” in terms of place and position, and the answers were drawn and expressed in physical, mental, spiritual, conceptual, and fantastical ways.
