오늘날 사진의 위상은 하루가 다르게 발전하고 있다. 포스트모던 시대에 들어서면서 텁텁하고 무거운 느낌의 회화보다 날아갈 듯 가벼우면서 누구나 쉽게 조작하고 무한히 재생산되는 사진이라는 매체에 대한 새로운 관심이 생겨났다. 사진이 독자적인 예술로 인정받기 전부터 광고나 매체를 통해 그것과 뗄 수 없는 관계 속에 놓여 있다. 모든 예술 장르가 탄생초기의 실용적인 목적에서 기인했던 것처럼, 사진도 초기의 기록이나 스토리 보조의 단계에서 벗어나 마침내 실용성을 초월한 예술 장르로 발전하였다. 정보와 복제라는 현대사회의 패러다임을 예술에 적용한 사진이라는 매체의 특성으로 인해 대중은 사진의 예술적인 신선함과 독창성을 거부해 온 것이 사실이다. 사진은 현대회화의 탄생에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 단지 회화가 버린 재현의 기능을 담당하던 것에 만족하지 않았다.
이번 전시는 화가의 숨결이 배제된‘아우라’가 없는 것으로 천대받던 사진의 힘을 보여주고 있다. 또한 오늘날 사진의 위상을 가늠할 수 있는 전시로, 회화 같은 사진, 조각 같은 사진, 영화 같은 사진 등 새로운 경향을 대표하는 중견작가들의 대규모 사진전이다.
Relative to the span of art, photography has rapidly become preferred medium of creative expression. In this post-modern era, the public°Øs preference for photographic images has surpassed even that of painting. This trend has been greatly enhanced due to technological advances that allow images to be more easily manipulated and reproduced infinitely.
Our connection to photography stems from its use as a key tool in historical records, advertising and mass media. As time progressed, we began to move away from the simply linear view of photography and it evolved from mere event recordation and journalistic support to its own distinctive artistic genre by the turn of the last century.
Even as photography began to emerge as a true artistic genre, photography as lacking the spirit of artists and its own distinctive ambience. The medium was by some viewed as fleeting. Today, the grandeur of photography is unquestionable. That grandeur is truly expressed in Power of Photography, 21French Contemporary Photographers, a full scale exhibition representative of contemporary French photographers.
