<20세기 라틴아메리카 거장>전은 국립현대미술관이 주한 중남미 16개 대사관의 적극적인 후원으로 기존의 서유럽이나 미국중심의 전시틀에서 벗어나 라틴아메리카 특유의 색감과 다양한 조형미를 느낄 수 있도록 기획한 전시이다.

1900년대 초반부터 1970년대까지의 라틴아메리카의 작품을 보여주는 이번 전시에는 서구의 살롱풍 미술에 반기를 들고 새로운 라틴아메리카의 특성을 미술작품을 통해 드러내고자 한 작품들이 선보인다. 이들 작품은 20세기 라틴아메리카의 복잡한 정치, 사회, 문화적 상황과 인종적 문제를 그들의 독특한 미감으로 형상화해 낸 작품들로, 서유럽 아방가르드 미술의 영향 속에서 살롱풍 미술에 반대하며 자신들의 조형언어를 찾아 나선 라틴아메리카 모더니즘 미술의 흐름을 살필 수 있는 작품들이다.

라틴아메리카 16개국 120여 점의 작품으로 꾸며지는 <20세기 라틴아메리카 거장>전은 20세기 라틴아메리카 미술의 흐름과 맥락에 따라 “세계의 변혁을 꿈꾸다 : 벽화운동”,“ 우리는 누구인가 : 라틴아메리카의 역사와 정체성”,“ 나를 찾아서 : 개인의 세계와 초현실주의”,“ 형상의 재현에 반대하다 : 구성주의에서 옵아트까지”로 나누어 전시함으로써 20세기 라틴아메리카 미술의 흐름과 고유한 특성을 살필 수 있다.

Organized by National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea and helped by the full support from the embassies of 16 Latin American countries to Korea, Masters of the 20th Century Latin American Art intends to deliver the peculiar colors and formative aesthetics of 16 countries in Latin America while challenging the dominant exhibition paradigm that has been centered upon the arts of Europe and the U. S. The exhibition features the artworks produced by the efforts to refuse the salon-style art of the West and to create artworks that mirrored the distinctive features of a new Latin America and in these works are conveyed through the idiosyncratic aestheticism of those Latin American artists the manifold aspects of the political, social and cultural circumstances of Latin America and the racial problems occurred there. In other words, this exhibition provides one with an opportunity to observe the art the passage of modern Latin American art that rejected salonstyle art under the influence of Western European avant-garde art and grouped for its own artistic vocabularies, through Latin American art up until the 1960s and 1970s during which contemporary artistic tendencies held sway.
