인도현대미술에 대한 관심은 현재 국제적으로 일어나고 있다. 이번 전시는 굴라모하메드 쉐이크와 같은 인도현대미술의 초기 작가로부터 바르티 케르, 수보드 굽타, 락스 미디어 콜렉티브 등 현재 세계 미술계에서 주목받고 있는 27명 작가들의 110여 점 작품을 전시한다. 전시는 설치, 영상, 회화, 사진 등 전 장르에 걸친 작품을 통해 인도의 일상과 역사, 사회와 개인, 모순과 공존의 문제들을 보여준다.
이번 전시의 제목인 ‘세 번째 눈을 떠라!’는 인도인의 두 눈 사이에 붙이는 물방울 모양의 장식, 빈디(bindi)를 떠올린다. 빈디는 지혜, 상서로움 등 여러 가지 상징적 의미를 가지고 있다. 그러나 무엇보다 흥미로운 것은 “세 번째 눈”이라는 감각의 의미로, 오랫동안 빈디는 인간의 두 눈을 넘어 지혜를 간파할 수 있는 제 3의 눈을 의미해 왔다. 그것은 단순한 시각이라기보다는 세계의 본래 모습을 파악할 수 있는 새로운 감각에 가까워 보인다. 또한 이와 같은 역사적 의미와 함께 빈디가 겪은 의미의 변천은 현대의 인도를 떠올린다. 지금까지 주로 소개되던 지역을 넘어 다양한 예술에 대한 미술관의 관심을 보여주는 이번 전시는 과거의 화려한 문명국, 이국적 인도에만 익숙해 있는 우리에게 현대의 인도를 바라볼 수 있다.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea presents ‘Chalo! India : A New Era of Indian Art – Open the Third Eye’ featuring 110 artworks including painting, sculpture, installation and video art by 27 Indian artists and artist groups including Gulammohamed Sheikh, Bharti Kher, Subodh Gupta, the Raqs Media Collective. It will be a major exhibition in Korea, particularly focusing on the recent activities as well as the dynamic changes of Indian contemporary art scene in the mid-1990s.
The subtitle ‘Open the Third Eye’ represents the ‘Bindi’, a forehead decoration, which is a symbol of wisdom and auspiciousness. It signifies the mystic third eye which is a spot considered a major nerve point in human body since ancient times. Today the religious significance of the bindi is largely forgotten and it is worn as a fashion accessory or became a souvenir in India.
This exhibition will explore a variety of dynamic phases of contemporary Indian art which has been attracting a great deal of international attention.
